    Hi,
I'm looking for a reliable car mechanic to fix the car to be NCTed shortly. Preferably in Dublin 8 area.
If you know any good tradesman, please let me know.
    Many thanks!

There's a place called Tracey's in Poddle Park (just off Lower Kimmage Road) that I've used before - wasn't for NCT stuff but it's worth asking them if they do that, they're a decent bunch in my experience.

Or you could, take the NCT test, if it fails, you will have a definitive list of faults that need fixing

+1 the NCT itself is the most cost effective pre-NCT test out there.

OP, save yourself time and money.

Forget this pre NCT rubbish. Send the car through the NCT as is, bring the fail sheet to a mechanic and get fixed what it actually failed on. Unless these places offering pre NCT tests can give you a guarantee in writing that it will pass (which I'd doubt) or they will fix it for free, then don't waste your money.

The cheapest pre NCT test you do is the NCT itself.

You see, it's €30 for a Pre-NCT test, where they might find problems. But judging from previous posts here, they tend to be pretty **** and often miss faults that cause the car to fail the NCT.
Plus, they can often find 'faults' that end up costing you a packet, before you get near the NCT.

OP: if you know you have items that will fail, it is probably a good idea to get them fixed beforehand. Other than that, just go straight to the NCT.

Many thanks for your feedback. It sounds like I should go for the NCT test no matter what. I hope it doesn't fail, but if it does, what decent garages do you know of that do the post NCT repairs in Dublin 8?

Advance Pitstop has free preNCT, but don't fix anything until after the real NCT unless it's obvious stuff like broken bulbs.

Totally agree with everyones comments regarding just bringing it to the NCT first.

Even if a pre-NCT place could give you a guarantee in writing that it'll pass and so on... it's a waste of a trip imo.
You could pass first time on the NCT anyways and save yourself the €30, the time and the fuel that you would've spent taking it to be NCT'd.
And worst case scenario, it fails the NCT and you can hand that report directly to the mechanic and he'll know exactly what he's got to do. So you eliminate any 'cowboys' throwing extra shít into the service as well. Win all round.

I meant for OP not to fix anything AdvP find until after the real NCT, unless it's obvious stuff like bulbs etc :P
It's free but don't get taken for a ride by them.

They will most likely tell you it needs 4 lots of brakes, and 4 shocks.

Let the NCT tell you what is wrong not someone with a vested interest.
