Firstly, Talk to the lecturer(s) in question. Some of them may be able to bring you up to the pass mark.

For compensation, you need to pass every other exam and have an average mark of above 45%.

The percentage which you can make up for via compensation depends on how well you've done in the rest of the modules, however you will have had to do pretty darn well to bring it up from 36%.
For instance, if you got 39% in said module, you might only need all passes,38% you'll need most of those passes in the early 50's, 37 you'll need the rest passed in high 50's and so on and so forth.
Depends entriely on the lecturer and program chair though, but that's what it's like in SALIS (on which I sit on the program board).

You may already have figured this out for yourself but, whilst not wishing to diss RyDar's post, it is inaccurate in one critical respect: it should not be particularly difficult to compensate for a 36%. Compensation is usually an automatic process: if you score between 35% and 39.4%, a Progression and Award Board will automatically compensate you PROVIDED:

    1. You have not failed anything else (or are unlikely to fail anything in the second semester exams).
    2. The module is not a core module.
    3. Your average mark across all your modules is greater than 45%.

Even these rules are sometimes subject to degree-specific variations. I.e., in some degrees, even core modules may be compensated. Furthermore, RyDar is correct in asserting that there is a relationship between the amount you fail by (specifically how far under 40% you are) and the average mark needed across your modules to allow compensation to occur. It works as follows: if you score a 39% (i.e. one percent under 40%) then your average mark must at least 1% over 40% (i.e. 41%). If you score 38% your average mark must be be at least 2% over 40% and so on. However, achieving an average mark in the mid-40s is hardly an onerous requirement.
