On the benefits of getting a Mech Check before private sale

Just included here as warning to others.

After Hilux went to great tow park in the sky been looking for a new bus for some time. For various reasons narrowed it to a lage 4x4. Nice example came up recently and agreed to have a look at her - I know my way around cars and spent a good hour going over her - one or two little niggles but generally in good nick. Not a bother and price was reasonable.

However, there had been a gap in her road tax and, as asking price is an awful lot of money to me, got the AA out to check her over. Now it €390 but worth every penny. Mech took her for four hours and spotted that all the panels on the off-side had been professionally replaced - different colour sealant to the near side was the clue that something was up - took them all off himself and found evidence of a big shunt in the past - damage to the A pillar, evidence of chassis impact and consequent problems with tracking and the steering arms. Also problem with the compressor for the suspension that I hadn't noticed and a few other niggles. Despite this she drove perfectly but loads and loads of problems stored up in the future - in his words "Walk away...very fast"

Even though got absolutely nothing for it best €390 I ever spent.

I wouldn't dream of buying any car without doing even the normal online check.
It's the only way that you can be sure you're being told the truth. As soon as you spot a lie walk away cos it won't be the only one the seller told.

Just because you have done an online check, doesn't make the car safe to buy. It does make it safer though.

For example, the car the OP was looking at was badly crashed, this isn't always going to show up on an online check unfortunately!

Same as the OP, did a similar check in the UK, cost me 180 from the AA. Car to me looked A1 but the AA soon gave me a "no buy" on the report.
Costly to get but it saved me a fortune.
