Changing from UPC to Sat - reuse cabling

I'm thinking of changing from UPC to Satellite. My UPC cabling was pre-wired to two rooms so what I want to know is if a dish is installed can it simply connect to the cables in the junction box at the side of the house to use the preexisting wiring instead of running completely new cables.

If so then do the UPC TV points also have to be changed?

Probably need new wires and outlets.

You need PF100 or TX100 cabling or similar and points that work to 2100MHz. UPC only uses up to 560Mhz or 864MHz.

For internal coax they use either cheap RG6 or in somecases pre-installed RG59 or worse.

Unless you have a Multiswitch, each outlet (and a PVR needs TWO outlets) must connect back to the LNB at the dish, you can't use a splitter or distribution amp. A "multiswitch" is a special box with four coax per satellite from LNB input that can drive 6 to 16 outlets (depending on model) and can be expanded to over 2000 outlets. Satellite Signal distribution is quite different from Cable or TV Aerial or MMDS distribution.

You probably want an Aerial too, and Sat/Terrestrial splitting "diplexer" plates in rooms and either sat/Terrestrial combiners per cable and Aerial Distribution amp, or a Multiswitch with a Terrestrial input for the aerial to feed all the outlet cables.

Not sure what cables were used but my upc install was done about 4 years ago and a few months ago I cancelled and reused the existing cable for satellite without any problems. Give it a go I suppose?

I had NTL - and when I canceled it I reused the existing cables as installed by the builders (it seemed to be decent quality coax with decent screening - and in good nick - even if it isn't top of the range sat grade - I reckon it is reasonable RG6) - I've had no problems (even combining sat & terrestrial). I wasn't going to run new cables to 3 rooms except where I had to (2nd feed to the lounge for PVR).

That said - I have invested in a roll of TX100 for cabling the inlaws for free TV this weekend - too much grief if it all goes wrong :)

If you do try to reuse what is there - you can always re-cable later if needed.
