Looking for some opinions on this. Going to look at these cars on Saturday.

The Passat is a 2.0 FSI DSG & the Accord is a 2.0 non vtec auto

Fuel economy seems similar on both, as does service costs etc

Which one would be the more reliable?

Well the Accord is known as one of the most reliable cars on the road; the 06 Passat has a very poor reputation for reliability.

I haven't driven the Auto in the Accord, but that 2 litre is a V-Tec engine alright. It's 156bhp. It's a good reliable engine.
The Passat's DSG box is probably about the best in the business. The FSI engine I think is around 150bhp. It seems to be a reliable engine, not enough around to really quantify, but no reliability reports from the GTI or VRS cars with the turbocharged version of it, so that should bode well for the N/A version.
The Passat is a comfortable car, refined and quiet (well insulated). The Accord is a better handling car, also comfortable and refined, perhaps not quite as well sound insulated. I would say that the Honda will be more reliable, but drive both and you'll probably have a preference.

Sorry but that is rubbish and typical pub talk from yester years. German cars are nowhere near as well built these days as they used to be and that is coming from me who currently owns one.

OP, I would not touch a 05/06 new shape Passat. They had serious reliability issues in those years. Fuel pumps, electric handbrakes, steering racks all gave problems in those years. The early DSG boxes were also not the most reliable and expensive to fix. I would also say that the interior of that model Passat is not superior to the Accord. Any Passats I sat in upto 08/09 had less than superior looking plastic trim around the doors and dashboard. The half leather seats in the Highline model always had a shine of fake leather look to them. Didn't feel like they would stand the test of time very well.

Of the two I would opt for the Accord but only in Executive trim, the interior really looks well put together and comes with things like electric memory heated seats, etc. The 2.0 litre i-VTEC engine is practically bomb proof and no turbo to worry about. Auto is not as advanced as the DSG but less likely to need attention.

Well I have a Passat and have never had trouble with it at all, in fact when I got the car my mechanic told me that the new model actually fixed a lot of issues that were evident in the older models. To say that one car is definately a better choice than the other in the case of used cars, is an exercise in futility. Unless you have both checked out by an independent mechanic you'll never know what problems you may be in for!

Personally I've always stuck with the mantra that the garage that offers me a better guarantee gets my business. If you're down sh*t creek without a paddle after 8 months driving, is the garage you bought your motor off going to help?

Just my 2 cents, this does seem to be a bit of an anti-VW thread, I just wouldn't put all Passats into a "bad car" bracket, I'm sure there are people out there with some Honda horror stories.

I've no particular liking for Japanese or German cars, but the Passat is one of the dullest lumps of car ever.

If it had to be one of these, then it'd be the Accord for me.

Agreed, but just a small correction: the seats in the Exec model are electric and heated, but they don't have a memory function (well not in my '05 one anyway). Maybe they are in the new (09?) model.

Accord all the way though. Mine is creeping up to 90,000 miles and feels as solid as the day it rolled off the line.

Limerick too, for all the same reasons. Although there's very few "paddy posh" cars that you can have in Limerick without seeing a flashier one being driven by folks with their tracksuit pants tucked into the their socks...

I could not agree more! absolutely spot on. Same goes for West Dublin, full of chav types in Passats. I think they think the bimmer 3 got too common!:D

Volvo S40 (Focus based one) is starting to show up a lot in council estates/affordable housing schemes.
