I assume your 'mechanic' ran a diagnostic check ?

Hi if your car is driving ok and then cuts out and the asc light comes on and wont start untill the asc light goes off then its the crank shaft sensor that is gone and sometimes this does not appear up on some diagnostic's but cost around 100 for the sensor and around 100 euro's to put in. there is a bmw mechanic near dorset street that work in joe duffys for years and knows his stuff if you want his number

thats brilliant ill try the crankshaft sensor, somebody told me it may also be a loose oil cap as this particular car runs on a vacume system, did you ever come accross this ?

if was loose oil cap then you should see oil in the engine bay above the oil cap. i had same symptoms as yours and it was the crank shaft sensor that was the problem, brough mine to a bmw dealership in dublin who didnt know what it was as didnt appear up on the diagnostic's they suggested to leave it with them for a week so a technician could have it, i was down in cahir once and drop into bmw morrissons to buy front lights and asked them and he said crankshaft sensor and it doesnt appear on diagnostics sometimes.

i dont know why but was told to check vacume open up engine bay and start the car and them open up oil cap etc dont know why but saw it being done to my car

Could well be a low oil pressure prob. I had this happen once on a high mileage car. When it had cooled down it would go again:eek:
