The genealogy forum may be able to help (which I frequent).
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1288

Maybe one of the mods can move it over and you could then supply the following details, and we'll get to work. Approx dates, religion (if it's obvious), names.
It might be something you could give to the Fingal County Archive (in Swords).

the best match for a corresponding civil index record shows :

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/South_City/Trinity_St_/60277/

Possible census match for Jane and James in 1911.

Same family on 1901 more matching names:

Though note the age discrepancy - there could be 2 different Janes. The older Jane has the same occupation as the younger one's husband: caretaker.

Checked into this on the Irish Times archive and I've found it.

Summarising the articles. Mary Behan was killed with a razor by John Wynne at 1 North King St. He gave himself up straight away. A Mrs Jane McGuinness also made a charge about him in relation to Mary Behan, the article states Jane is his aunt. Also references a Mrs Keane and her mother Mrs Sullivan of Lucan. Oh second article says Jane McGuinness was also Mary's mother, so a possible remarriage there. Seems they fancied each other and it went sour. John Wynne had recently been discharged from the army (90th Regiment).

Later on Jane Magennis is deposed, she's a widow and Mary is the daughter of her first marriage. Mary was a forewoman in a stays factory on Sth William St. This article says JW was in the 98th Regiment. Interesting to note these discrepancies. The cousins apparently had a row about her grandfather, who had been involved in rearing Mary.

I widened out the search. The trial took place in February of 1880 and Jane McGuinness had died in the intervening months. Jury took ages to agree and tried several times to say they couldn't but the judge kept forcing them back to deliberate. Eventually they decided it was manslaughter and he was sentenced to 20 year penal servitude. Apparently John Wynne exclaimed he might as well give him 20 more, on hearing his sentence.

It is more difficult to trace forward than backwards. 1911 is the most recent census available. If you spend a small bit of money on certificates, and using familysearch, you may be able to get someone born in the 40s or 50s, who would hopefully still be alive.

    Strange twist.
I was told yesterday that the bible would have belonged to a prist. As it has some type of crest on it?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 6,707 Mod ✭✭✭✭pinkypinky

It's possible - you mean it has a coat of arms? Can you scan the image to show us? Armigerous families are usually well off (and often CoI). This family appears to be Catholic, and though they all seem to have jobs, are literate, etc, the newspaper articles about Mary Behan's death don't suggest rich people.

I think that's the crest for the Vatican or the pope..

    I think so too.

    Yes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_the_Holy_See

Coat of arms of the Holy See. That may well be printed on the book because it was an official edition or something.

I found almost the same crest in a 1958 Catholic directory - although not as clear.

It's even has the same publisher

I'd agree with pinkypinky that the inclusion of this crest probably means it's an official Catholic publication

oh this has a publisher James Duff, 7 wellington quey MDGCCLXIII .
SO CAN I TAKE IT THAN THAT IT BELINGED TO A PRIST?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,777 ✭✭✭shanew

I think it's the same publisher James Duffy - the company just moved a number of times over the intervening 100 years.

I dont think it necessarily belonged to a priest, I think the crest is printed as part of the bible, rather than added later by it's owner. The bible could could have been a family item.

The fact that it has family names and dates in it strongly suggests it belonged to a family.
