    You make it sound as if its a choice between Maths and Irish when it clearly is not.

    Maths has been a hot topic in education circles for the last few years. A new curriculum is being rolled out. For the first time ever, students with special education needs are being integrated into the mainstream classrooms. I would factor some (not all) of our recent PISA slippage to this as it has completely changed the classroom in many schools.

    And you are right, teachers pay is being frozen but it has been cut by about 16% in the last 2 years.

    By the time I finish my h.dip this year I will have spent not far off €12,000 in getting a masters in my subject and the teaching diploma. If I manage to find work (which is highly unlikely for a while) I can expect to earn €6,000 less than a new entrant teacher that would've started in 2008. Teachers have taken cuts too.
