Possible break away rock/metal society

Hi. Im a 2nd year in DCU and have been a member of the music society sine my arrival however I feel as if those of us who play instruments, are not part of a band and who predominantly listen to and play rock and metal are not accommodated for by this large and diverse society. All i really want from the society is to be given an opportunity to randomly play with like-minded folk for an hour or two each week but since the complete removal of the jamming sessions, no such opportunities exist and I feel that the current music society is not really concerned by this. I suppose my reason for posting is to see if there would be enough interest in a society concerned only with the aforementioned genres and how one would go about forming such a society. Also if anyone wants to express their opinion on the issue feel free to do so.
    Thanks

Only reason I joined musicsoc was for jam sessions. Very disappointed when they finished up. Would definitely be up for it (I'm not very good though!) :P

You could run for the Musicsoc committee and work to reintroduce the sessions next year. Committees have limited time and resources so they sometimes need to cut back certain projects to accommodate others but it doesn't mean that past projects can't be brought back by other students. There are new space constraints due to the Hub being done up this year so it may also simply be down to a lack of space in which to hold jam sessions.

I'd definitely be interested! I joined the music soc in October but haven't gone once :(

I don't sing or play any instruments, I'm just a huge rock fan. So while I would be interested, I guess there wouldn't be anything for me to do..:p

Not in DCU yet, but hope to be in Sep and I would be interested :)

You could do listening recommendations / gig-spotting / rounding up groupies! :p

Well i spose there is alot more that can be done if such a society was to go ahead. We could organise gig outings round Dublin since there seems to be quite a few good gigs going on in Fibbers most weekends. I spose I should at least raise my concerns/demands (depends on how you look at it) within the music soc 1st before going ahead with it nut its good to see theres some interest in regular jamming sessions.

You'd want to get in touch with music soc first, I think there might be specific rules about societies saying that two can't serve the same purpose.
I pretty sure a fair few guys in music soc are into rock/metal, running a society is a hard job, maybe you should offer to run these things on behalf of them?

Urgh. Metal. I much prefer some Arctic Monkeys and The Killers.

I honestly don't find that angry shouty stuff that interesting. I can't even hear the words they are saying.

    We don't need another Metallica.

    Ok... then don't join. Simples!
And you're right, we don't. They've still got it.

Great idea. Another aspect to the existing soc makes more sense than trying to start a new one, especially with such a similar core activity. Offer and find out. They'd probably love it.

    Ignorant generalisation much?

On topic, I'd be somewhat interested in a rock/metal society (or even some part of Music Soc that deals with rock/metal)
The gig meet up idea is great. I'd say there would be the numbers to get the soc going ,but there could definitely be a problem in terms of it crossing over with Music soc too much to be justifiable.

Having someone as part of Music soc that "specialises" in the metal side of things might be better all right.

I'd definitely be interested in this

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I presume u are referring more to Death metal as opposed to Heavy metal. I can hear the words to metallica songs, but only make out some of the words of a death metal band. I like Death metal because of the anger anyway, the words dont matter a whole lot.

My brother's the 1st year rep of music soc so he can't really do much, but I'll ask him to raise it with the committee

Music soc chair and a few committee members are in my class, I can try mention it if you like?

I would appreciate it if you could do that.

    LOLZ.

The jam sessions always seemed like fun. Was never in music soc though. A few of us did grab the glass room every so often last year though for a ROCK OUT. When I remember who we asked about it, I'll let you know.

The glassroom is gone now. The language school and offices are now in that area.

Just an update to tell you that I have e-mailed the society about my concerns regarding the lack of activities for those of us who are into rock/metal. I informed them of this forum and suggested they elect someone to deal with those who are into this genre and who can organise gig outings and jamming sessions. As of today I have yet to recieve a reply. Somewhat expected I suppose.:(

I got a response last night from the society as follows:

I appreciate your concern but we do not have a set venue for frequent jamming sessions. We have been in discussions with SLC members and Helix staff to create an alternate arrangements with out much results. We are aware that this is a serious problem and are very sorry for any inconvenience. We have been promised that a "Loud Music Room" will be built for us in the near future to facilitate such needs but until then we are limited in our options. The only thing we can do is try and ask the Helix to give us free use of on of their small theatres, which we have already done and are awaiting confirmation. It is not an ideal system as it will involve moving all required equipment out of storage and back again after (which we do not mind, we're no strangers to lugging around our gear) but more importantly it will be inconsistent and unreliable due to the fact that we are subject to bookings that may happen in the Helix (we are not given priority and can have our time taken away from us to be given paying customers).
In summary, we are all to aware of the problem, have secured a long term solution and are doing our very best to work on the short term. We appreciate your concern and we're glad to see we have some passionate members. We will do our best for you and the rest of the society.

Talk to you soon, hopefully at a jamming session.

Well I suppose that this isnt the most desirable response but at least they are trying to address the situation.
