Do I have the wrong idea about barbers?

I'm a man and over the last few months I've been to various different hairdressers. Most of them have either made a mess of my hair or just didn't listen to what I wanted.

I'm running out of hairdressers to go to now but there are a couple of barber shops in the town (Carlow). However I've always thought that barbers were only for men who either get their hair totally shaved off or get it cut extremely short. My hair looks terrible when it's really short (due to a double crown and psoriasis on my head) so I'd like a short back and sides with enough on top to put a parting in.

Is my view about barbers right or wrong? Is it possible to get a haircut that isn't too short and that's even from a barber? Or do all barbers just hack hair off like I imagine?

Barbers cut mens hair. They specialise in mens hair.

What's the worst that could happen? They cock it up? Sure you've already said that the other ones cock it up anyway.

BUT if everyone is making a mess of it, then perhaps it isn't the hairdressers/barbers. Perhaps it's the style that you want not suiting your head?

I'd love if there was a proper barbers around here. A proper manly barbers, place smelling of sandlewood and coffee, hair and barbercide. But I've recently found a hairdresser/barbers that does the job better than the others.

Hairdressers never listen to people so i'd say a lot of barbers are the same....I cut my own hair now because the hairdressers seemed to always think that they had free reign over my hairstyle.
When I brought my 2 year old boy for his first hair cut at the barbers the woman cut off all his hair even though I said I wanted only a trim because in her opinion he would look like a girl, his hair wasn't even that long so now I cut his hair too!

Be assertive with the barber. Tell him/her about your previous experiences and you are trying them to see if they can cut your hair to your instructions.
You are sitting in front of a mirror watching as they cut your hair. You should be able to see if they are making a mess of it or not. And if it is the former then for goodness sake tell them.

You have to be able to tell the barber what you want in real terms, not vague terms. "Trim it a bit" is not a real term, it's vague and your idea of a trim and his idea of a trim might be worlds apart.
There is a link in the first post of thread to a few terms that help. The rest of the thread is interesting enough reading too. :)
