Grading system

According to the NUIG website (http://www.nuigalway.ie/ushandbook/academic_procedures.html), the grading system is this:

NUI Galway will issue a transcript showing courses taken, the number of ECTS attaching to each course and the mark attained, in percentage terms. The University does not issue Grades. However, it will, if requested by the student’s home institution, provide appropriate information to enable it to convert the University’s results system to its own.
    NUI Galway Grading System

    First Class Honours
    70% and above
    Second-Class Honours, Grade 1
    60% - 69%
    Second-Class Honours, Grade 2
    50% - 59%
    Third-Class Honours
    45% - 49%
    Pass
    40% - 44%
    Fail 0% - 39%
First Class Honours: 70% and above
Second Class Honours, Grade 1: 60-69%
Second Class Honours, Grade 2: 50-59%
    Third Class Honours: 45-49%
    Pass: 40-44%
    Fail: 0-39%

    This seems to have changed since I was last in college. A = > 70%, B = 60-69%, C = 50-59%, D=? Both 3rd class honours & pass? How exactly does it work?

Also, for the exams before Xmas, we were only given grades as our results (A, B, C etc.). Is there anyway to get a specific % of our result? There is a big difference between getting 70 and 90%. And this counts when the average is calculated so it seems unfair not to provide the specific mark before you do your summer exams...

The first semester results are provisional. They might want to tinker with them a bit more so you'll get your percentage grade in June.

    D+ = 3rd class "honours"

    D- = Pass

Also, depending what course you're taking, there may be other requirements. Like, in order to get a 2:1 overall, you have to get at least a 2:2 in all of your other modules groups, etc.

Well thats good, was worried that a 3rd class honours was a C.

Its unfair not to get a % grade now though. I wonder if the lecturer would tell you...

You can email your lecturers if you want a specific percentage, I did this and had no problem.

Our class got an email saying not to email lecturers because they are not obliged to provide percentages.

You get all your percentages in summer when you get your final results.

Guys, there's no such thing as D+ and D-:
Third Class Honours (usually only awarded in Final Year, at least in Arts) is a C (45 - 49%)
    Pass (D) = 40 - 44%
The only band for which a plus and minus exists is B+ (2.1) and B- (2.2)
As the OP suggests, there was a switch in the bands around 8 years ago. 50% is now a 2.2, while in the past it was a third.

What actually constitutes as "honours" here? I know it varies from uni to uni, my last degree I only had to hand in all the coursework to get honours.
It seems very strange to attach the title to a third class degree... What's that worth? Just because it says honours, it's still a shitty third rate result.

To the best of my knowledge, as far as Science is concerned, all you have to do is pass your fourth year to get an Honours degree.
Presumably if you get an 1.1, 2.1, or 2.2 in your third year you would also refer to that as an honours degree.
It doesn't say a whole pile...

Think its all all to do with doing the 4 years really, Irish system more like scotland than england, know in TCD if you dropped out at 3rd year science you just got a pass presume similar enough here.

I don't know about that honours would certainly be a bonus going for post-grads especially if your in competition with english people who may have MA/Msc as part of their 4 year degree course.

That is brilliant, even though I can't decide whether it's satire or not.

On the off-chance that it's not: what happened to doing the best you can to get a good grade?

Can someone tell me what the grading system in NUIG is? 1st year Arts?

Like what constitutes an A, B etc and are is there A+ or - etc.

Also, I was unfairly marked in my History exam for the Summer which means I cannot get into History in 2nd year, does anyone have any similar story?

i wouldnt be so sure. maybe you think you nailed it but they could have been lookingfor something totally different.

That's fairly surprising. I've done history for a few years and found the staff to be fairly decent (apart from one lecturer who can be very rigid)

If you're serious that it was marked unfairly you can always appeal.

I thought it was too late to appeal. Thanks anyway!!

Did you fail the continous assessment(tutorials, essays etc)? You'd be surprised how much that counts for at the end of the day.

    What constitutes an A, B, C, etc?

    I know 70%+ is an A

But I'm not sure about the others?
