Meteorite identification in the West?

    I've found a possible meteorite.

Where in the West can I bring it for identification?

I was thinking perhaps someone at NUIG would be the best bet?

    Thanks.

What colour is it? Get a magnet and stick it too it and it and see if its magnetic.
Also show some pictures or we won't believe you:pac:

I've already tested everything I can and it passes all of the home tests so I'd like a lab or someone who specialises in this to have a look now.

Would prefer not to give too much other info out here for now.

Just wondering if someone could point me in the right direction for further investigation.

Try calling the Geology Dept of NUIG. That would be a good place to start.

Thank you, I will give them a call today.

If one was to find a small meteorite on their own land in Ireland, what are the legalities in regard to ownership?

If one reported such a find, is it likely to be taken away from you [without money exchanging hands] in the same way that an object of archeological significance would be to be displayed in a museum?

I'd really appreciate if anyone could shed some light on this. Thanks.

Well done on your find, if You found it on your land then it's yours, you can choose to keep it or sell it for alot of money to people who collect them. Completly up to you as it's yours

    Thanks for the info.

Yes this was found on my own land, and may not be what I think it is at all but to the best of my ability to check it, it does seem to be one...

    Fingers crossed!

    I will do.

I don't want to make too much of a fuss yet in case I'm way off the mark.

I've been trying to get in touch with someone in Geology at Galway but no luck yet. If anyone knows someone in particular that could take a look at this for me this evening that would be excellent. I'm quite eager now to have it proven or ruled out!

I'm nearer to Galway, won't be in Dublin so it'd be quicker to get it checked locally.

I'm itching to know too! :D
