FG wants to publish LC results

Reading a piece in the Irish Independent yesterday about one of FG's education policies for the election. They are looking to force all schools to publish their LC results for all to see.

Now I know a lot of parents will be for this, however speaking from the inside I can see huge disadvantages to this idea. For one I agree with the editorial from the same paper that publishing the results will do nothing but marginalise the disadvantaged schools and put even more emphasis on wrote learing. Teachers will be under even more pressure to achieve those results thus forcing them to teach to the exam and not give the students a proper education.

My bigger issue is with the preception of some schools that will be out there. I have worked in several different types of secondary schools, and currently work in a DEIS school. Speaking from my personal point of view the LC results of my current school would not match up with the big school locally, however from working in both I have never met such committed teachers before in any school I have been in.

The work that goes into some of our students to ensure they get a LC is fantastic, those same students I can guarantee would not have lasted to the JC in the larger local school. However, we also have some fantastic LC results each year, with kids going on to great jobs and colleges. Each school has its own demographic to deal with and the work that goes on in some schools is fantastic, LC points is not everything that education is about.

I know the papers will put it across as the Teacher's Unions just looking after their own, but I would like to ask what those on the ground think of this idea. Is it just me that thinks this would go damage even further an education system that is quite flawed?

I dont see what benefit this has over the league tables that are published already. Sounds like a stupid pointless idea.

FG seem to love to tinker at things in the education system that really aren't an issue. I have never heard of any major demand for publishing results. Irish to be abolished now which I think is a terribly shortsighted idea. I really cannot see myself voting for this party.

This is as demented as their notion that they can get 30,000 out of the public sector, without affecting frontline services i.e:rolleyes: They're also committed to getting rid of quangos, but are keen to maintain support services:rolleyes:

The contradictions continue....they're promising everything under the sun. I'm no fan of Labour, but the only person I could have any faith in as Minister for Education is Ruairi Quinn.

Who referred to The Department of Education and Skills as being Dept of Ed and Science. I know it's petty but make an effort to get the name right. I Know it's easy to revert back to what you're familiar with but, c'mon.....

He also jumped into our school few weeks back for a photo op and ran out of the place without talking to any of the teachers!!

Really can't see me voting for any of them at the moment.

I wouldn't have much faith in him as Minister for Education after the ridiculous (now withdrawn) ideas Labour have published on education recently - making kids who aren't reaching literacy targets work a longer school day has to be one of the most inane ideas I've heard from any party.

Having said, that, it seems like Labour are the best out of a staggeringly bad lot in general.

There are already league tables published in the national papers.
I don't see this as anything new. Just generating headlines

Irish to be abolished?!? When did that happen??

I thought they were just proposing it would be an optional subject. By your definition Biology is already abolished.

I think there are bigger issues to worry about rather than the name of the department. I still call it the Dept of Education and Science. That doesn't make me any less knowledgeable about educational issues.

I still call NUIG by it's former name UCG and I did that only this morning when a student asked me a question about colleges. He then stopped me to ask what was UCG. :)

    It's called habit.

I stated it was petty but if I were going on a national debate trying to prove I cared about the issues I would make an effort to get it right. Especially as Labour spokesperson for Education and Skills!

Are FG now the Irish Tories ?Varadakar was compared to Margaret Thatcher :) on yesterday's midday news ... So the FF Minister for Education thinks we're all incompetent , FG want us fasttracked to the crumbling UK system asap and Labour are giving 30-60 minutes after school detention to underperforming teachers ...Jesus wept!As Independents are unlikely to have any clout on educational issues that leaves Sinn Fein as far as I see it ...
