Ok i need a problem solved.

A truck is travelling at 100mph with a car on the back. The car reverses off the back of the truck (Smokey & the Bandit style), what speed is the car doing and in what direction is the car initially travelling?

There isn't enough information to determine the speed of the car, other than that it is not going 100mph in the direction of the truck.

Ok, the speed of the car or the truck isn't really important. Sorry for the confusion.

The arguement I'm having with a mate is that i believe if the car reverses off the back of the truck travelling in one direction at a reasonably fast speed then it will continue in the same direction as the truck initially.

He on the other hand believes the car, as it is reversing will move in the opposite direction of the truck once it touches the ground.

Movies like the Italian Job show the cars coming off the back of trucks and then straigh away going the same speed as the truck it reversed off.

if the car is doing the same speed as the truck by bei9ng on the back of it (take is as 100MPH) and reverses back off it at 10 mph then its speed relative to the ground (assuming the truck is going in a straight line at a constant speed) is 90MPH. It will continue in the same direction at almost the same speed as the truck.

In order for it to go in the opposite direction it would need to reverse at a speed greater than that of the truck. i.e. backwards at 101MPH or whatever.
