Have been looking to trade up to 2008 diesel and I am finding that its very hard to get decent car for less than €13000. Have the dealers forgotten that these cars are now 3 years old. Trying to sell car privately now and will probably go north if successful. I dont want to take money out of country but dont feel I have any choice. Is there deals to be had or am I looking in wrong places? Only looking for mid sized saloon or hatch. Any help or comments would be appreciated

People place a premium on the lower tax therefore they are in demand. The prices reflect that demand.

Exactly. People are low emission diesel crazy these days, hence the inflated prices.

    Most diesels are overpriced :)
2008 ones more so than the rest.

08 mid sized diesels are in demand and as a result the asking price on the fore courts reflects this

i think you'll find that theres a good shortage of 2008 and 2009 cars and taking into account that you and alot more are also looking for 08 on cars etc then the price is only what people will pay. if there priced too high they wont sell.

just because you cant find an 08 car for less than 13k doesnt tell us anything, i cant find an 08 one for less than 20k at the moment but im looking for a 520d....you could be looking for a Liana for all we know

Ya!!!. Some people are willing to spend 10k trading up 3 years to a 08 with low tax just to save a few hunderd quid every year..

2008 was a terrible year for car sales in this country, it's all about supply and demand. Importing is probably the way to go for a diesel.

and IIRC 2009 was even worse...

Was hoping there would be some movement from the price listed but doesnt appear to be any. Looks like I'll be heading north or across the water. Thanks for the help and fast replies. Not looking for Liana though! (always has to be one sarcky comment)

Yeah the price difference between 07 and 08 models is mental. Consider the UK instead.

I purchased a 08 diesel car last year and paid top dollar for it. It was the car I wanted as I had been looking for months. A 09 should be holding its value very well as they are as scarce as hens teeth..

and there always has to be one that takes themselves a little too serious

it wasnt a sarcy comment, you never mentioned what car your looking for so we dont know if 13k is cheap, correct or overpriced?

if your on the lookout for a 2008 320d and complaining that 13k is too dear your way out, hence my Liana comment........

best of luck in the UK.

Feckin brilliant the way 08's are holding value isn't it :D

Got near 11k for an 08 Base Passat 1.9Tdi with 155k on it. Over 8k for a Focus 1.6Tdci Zetec with 144k!

Actually made a small profit on both those sales, doesn't make up the losses on the 07's where RV's are way off. Looks like RV's on the early 08 stuff was more or less right for the run of the mill stuff, have some bigger stuff coming back that's still going to lose it's ar$e though :(

how well do you think 09 cars will hold their value?
my dad has an 09 E60 520d Msport in Le Mans Blue and it has just passed the 14,000km mark. should it hold a decent retail value...in your opinion of course?

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

A typical Irish buyer prefers losing €1,000 in depreciation for every €100 saved in motor tax :D

It was the same last year looking for 08 cars. They are probably exactly the same price

09's are doing well too. Got over 20k for a boggo base model 120ps A4 2.0Tdi with 103k on. I'd excpect a very decent valuu for your Dad's car - would be a well sought after motor.

(any chance he'd swap for an 05 Accord with 160k? :p)

Go North or East, its the only way corner back 2, I have just got an 08 diesel from outside the state for £7000, and with only 28000 miles on the clock, I recommend that you look at Autotrader.co.uk, and prepare to travel by train, boat, or plane. Its hassle alright, but you won't be sorry :)

    What are you looking for?

What cars have you looked at here and what cars are you looking at in the UK?

Have you got all your sums correct?

I've been going around dealers for the past week or so looking for a newish diesel and there is a marked shortage of 08/09/10 diesel cars. Absolutely tons of petrol models in this range of years and they are going for knock-down prices. Diesels are selling for anything up to one and a half times (in some cases a bit more) the price of the same-year petrol version of some cars. The gap between buying an 2010 diesel and buying a new 2011 diesel is so tiny in a lot of cases it would be nonsensical to buy the 2010.

Two seperate dealers told me that they were importing at least ten second hand diesels a week on top of the new cars they were selling to meet demand and these cars were sold before they hit the forecourt. Petrol cars are being dumped en masse.

If you want a bargain on a newish petrol, nows the time.

    Big petrol cars particularly hit.
Cheapest new model petrol Mondeo Titanium X on Carzone: €13k. Diesel: €17k.
    Cheapest petrol 2008 Volvo S80: €14k. Diesel: €17k.

How much would I expect to pay for an '07 Mondeo 2.0 Diesel, (new model). Mileage would be high, around 160k or so?

6-7k? Depending on condition and history.

You'd be very lucky to get one for that price

Sold a late 07 1.8Tdci Zetec in Tango with 155k last September, to the Trade, for €8,650.

Price will have come down a bit since September, but not by that much, and not to trade rates.

An LX in a private sale would be around €8k at this stage I'd say.

Have looked a few Tiidas, Meganes, Fabia Estates.
Was thinking of something similar in the UK. There seems to be value in Astras, 308s but would consider any recommendations. Hoping I can get good low milage car for under 12k including vrt
