    Hi all,

I posted this in acc. and property and was advised to post here so hopefully you can help :)

Basically I moved out of the house I was renting a room in on Feb 1st. The landlord lives there and checked the room giving it the ok in front of witnesses. He handed me a cheque for my deposit. I lodged the cheque the next day in the bank. A few days later I received a letter from bank with cheque attached. Letter said it could not be cashed for the reason stated....on the cheque was written stolen. I rang the bank and they said that he had reported it lost or stolen. Surely he is in the wrong here somewhere, he is basically accusing me of stealing from him.

I contacted him after I spoke to the bank and he said he would go in the next day and sort it out. He didn't. He is now ignoring my calls.

    Thank you :)

Go see a solicitor and ask about defamation and the deposit issue. Hold on to the cheque and the letter from the Bank and give to your solicitor.

Was the reason "lost or stolen"? Or did it just say stolen?

I'm guessing the landlord stopped the cheque, in order for him to do this he would have to give some sort of a reason so the bank official can check a box. I don't think it means he has accused you of stealing the cheque.

I'd contact treshold for information on this and go from there.
