I'm planning on doing some travelling around Sweden by train in the summer but I find the train fares quite expensive.
Does anybody know any ways to save on fares?

Sweden is an expensive country and it's also about the same size as California. Are the distances you're travelling large?

You could possibly save by using the bus but they're a lot slower. :(

www.seat61.com should have some info on fares in Sweden for you, not sure how cheap they get though.

here's some info from that site
Swedish rail fares vary like air fares by date & train, so shop around for the cheapest tickets. After selecting a departure and price, you may be given an option to upgrade to a 'rebookable' ticket (which can be changed) or to a 'rebookable, refundable' ticket. If you don't select either of these extra-cost options, your ticket will probably be non-refundable & non-changeable. Just stick with the base price if you want the cheapest fare. You're then given a chance to choose your exact seat if you like, with a seating plan.

Firstly, you will love Sweden in the summer :-)

What age are you and do you know roughly whereabouts or between where you will be going?

Most trains are run by SJ (Statens Jarnvagar=State Rail) www.sj.se

Prices can be rather expensive but the trains are excellent and there are deals to be had

    On buses:

Swebus would be the main operator and they have good prices and cover large parts of Sweden

    See cover here:

I am from Sweden but living here, you can PM me for more info if you like or just keep asking on thread

Don't think that you have heard about euro rail pass that helps you to travel all over the Europe at somewhat reduced cost. It is quite convinient to get and use.

Hej, Jag vill lära mig svenska. I am new to this site and just starting to learn Swedish with the help of http://www.byki.com/ It's going well but I would like to have a conversation with someone as I progress. I live in dublin but will be heading to sweden (Stockholm) in June and I can't wait. If you are currently in dublin let me know and maybe we can meet up for a chat over coffee / pint. If you are in Sweden thats great too and maybe I can meet you when I come over. Basically If there is anyone out there who would like to talk/ skype/ email or just give some advice on where to go and things to do, Please get in touch. Tack
