Fianna Fáil TD Ned O'Keeffe has suggested that the Army could be forced to take over the running of the country.

Mr O'Keeffe said: “The situation has become so bad that an Army coup is a real possibility.”

The Leader of Fianna Fáil Micheál Martin has laughed off the suggestions saying "there's absolutely no chance the Army will be called in".

In an interview with the Evening Echo, Mr O'Keeffe blamed Brian Cowen and Brian Lenihan for making a "right mess of the country".

He said: “Our political system is going to fail further. The two Brians have made a right mess of the country and I see the real possibility of an Army coup.

"People thought I was mad with all the things I have predicted through the years, but I foresaw the economy collapsing due to lax regulation on building housing estates and unwanted shopping centres."

He claimed Charlie Haughey would be turning in his grave if he saw what Ireland had become.

"So what if Charlie liked nice women and a few extra nice shirts? He was the best leader we ever had."

I hope this clown keeps on with his guff.

He's doing the country a great service by hastening the demise of FF, and the son he decided to spring on the local cumann at the last minute.

Cant see this happening at all, there isnt a shred of proof or anything near it to warrant a military coup.

I'm sure this coup will take place in the far away, imaginary region of NedOKeefeLand and not anywhere near Ireland.

    What a tool.

In fairness, there is plenty there to warrant a military coup, shoulda probably been done about 2 years ago :P

There is little desire for it to happen though. Damn apathy! :p

A coup? I can only imagine the compensation claims that would be coming in due to the "anxiety and distress" of being forced to seize control of the country using armed force.

    Is that man on meds?

He's obviously been watching too much Sky News about countries where they don't have a democratic systems.

Truely the stupidest utterance from a democratically elected representative that I have ever heard. Particularly when it was his own party that created the mess and it seems that his own son is keep to join the ranks.

No wonder this character is 'outgoing'. Clearly he doesn't have the back bone for politics and is unable to take responsibity for his own actions while elected to the Dail and in government. All very well to say that he didn't agree with them after the fact/

Clearly a man that made no difference. Not sure if the media are worse for publishing these utterances.

By inference it also suggests that there exists a group of people within the military that would have been willing to undertake a coup. An apology to the military might be in order too.

Ned O Keefe also wanted the film "Babe" banned in Ireland because he thought it would damage rasher and pork sales. Yet people still voted this plonker in time after time.

What a complete and utter PLANK, just goes to prove that democracy works, we get what we vote for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He should be making an apology to the Defence Forces. To make a statement like that only implies that there actually is a group of army officers that were conspiring a coup.
