Is job hunting online a waste of time?

Referring to casual jobs that appear on jobs.ie etc, do you think this is a waste if time due to the huge volume of respondents the jobs get? I apply for several each day and at least every few days a job comes up that I am perfectly suitable and qualified for but still I never hear a word back. Just them automated responses saying they will contact you if successful etc. I dunno whether it is just that the job environment is so overly competitive now since people with Masters degrees are willing to flip burgers, or if my applications just go in to a trash inbox with the other hundreds of applicants applying. Its just very frustrating coz there is only so much ground you can cover in 1 day when physically looking for a job and it is often an exhausting process. I try spend as much time as I can door calling, and applying through various online sites but I am starting to think that I should not even be bothering with online sites as it is just to much of a lottery.

You're probably going to get a varied response to this query. My experience: I've had two jobs since I left college 2 and a half years ago. Both were found online. And I'm just your run of the mill 4 year degree holding graduate. In fairness, it took a while to get my first but I partly blame that to the recession.I was let go at Christmas;started my new job about a month ago. My first job was advertised on FAS,the second on Jobs.ie. It's a matter of perseverance and having a very clear CV and a neat and succinct cover letter that pops out from the crowd. Our at least that's what I gather from my experience!

If you have a great cover letter and CV you are more likely to get a response.

Are you tailoring each job application for each job?
