A couple of linked espionage type stories that I found of interest

First is the story of the partially built (in late 1980's) American embassy in Moscow. The Soviets had bugged floors, columns, fixtures, etc. When this was discovered the Americans decided that they would have to pull down the partially completed structure at massive costs and start it again. How they expected that they would stop the same happening again is questionable! They eventually flew in American workers to build the dismantled part of the embassy.

Fast foraward to 2001 and the revealing of the existance of a tunnel under the Russian embassy in Washington. Possibly built in response to the Soviet era bugging, the Russians were aware of this through a spy.
