Rotational/Directional tyres

Turns out that I have a single rotational tyre on the front of my car, pointed out to me by a mechanic who noticed it was fitted on the wrong way by the numpty who owned the car before me.

I have to replace the other tyre on the front before my NCT on Saturday, so I was wondering if I'm better off sticking another rotational tyre on, or a standard tyre and then replacing the rotational one later on?

I also imagine that summer/winter is kind of irrelevant, i.e. that you can get either summer, winter or all-season rotational tyres?

If you stick on a standard, won't the 2 tyres be different on the same axle, making it an NCT fail?

It doesn't really matter all that much. Directional tyres should be in the right direction but tbh if they're not it doesn't mean much, handling in wet may be decreased.
I drove on two fronts wrong way for weeks trying to figure out an issue and never noticed any problem.

You could drive with four different brand (same size) tyres on, as long as thread depth and condition is good NCT won't mind.

Seamus, you should change both tyres at same time imo, this will have much bigger effect than direction.

This is the way it is at the moment :D

    Money :(
Plus I'd be loath to bin the rotational one, there's like 3.5mm of tread left on it.

I hear what you're saying about money, but 3.5mm is really the end of a tyre's life anyway. There's no way i'd put that on one front wheel and a brand new tyre on the other side, IMO it's just too dangerous.

Its best practice to have 2 tyres of the same brand and type on the front axle at the very least. The NCT are not yet failing on this however its down the line.

As for saying that a rotational tyre on the wrong want won't effect much...well, thats the sort of attitude toward car maintenance that has so many cars in ditches.
A rotational tyre on the wrong way is simply dangerous, especially in the wet.

Directional and rotational are the same thing.

I didn't notice anything re handling in wet or dry but yeah it should be put on the right way of course.
That was just referring to driving a small amount of time.

Directional and rotational are the same thing.

Not really, directional implies it has to rotate in a specific direction ,rotational is anyway

Or look in adverts for people selling tyres from breaking cars?

Will they fit them for me too? :D

I'd actually prefer to go with new tyres from a decent tyre place, at least then I know I'm less likely to run into trouble down the road.

Symetrical tyres can rotate any direction.

Rotational/directional have to rotate in the direction specified on the tyre.

Asymetrical have an inside and an outside to the thread.

seeing as you have to replace one side just swap the wheel to that side (ie left to right) and then it will be travelling in the correct direction. :D

The Load rating and speed rating must be the same for the test everything else is'nt important !!
