Hey, looking to pick up either a bull or a bull calf of this type, must be full pedigree and preferable not Holstein, while semi common in Holsteins it is rare enough in the British strain, any information would be greatly appreciated.

You wouldn't by any chance have any idea of the mans name would you? or general locations? Its more than likely that his herd carries the gene, im running a british friesian herd myself but the last of my "red" cows is getting old now and it would be nice if i could a few more of them back in circulation again.

As fair as i know a rotbunt is an MRI 75% - holstein 25% cross of sorts is it not? we tried MRI a good 20 years ago for one generation and i have to say we got rid of them all and their offspring fairly fast again (regards bad feet problems)
Thing is the herd is actually a pedigree British friesian herd so im going to try and perseve that if at all possible, orginally we had 3 pure pedigree red British friesian cows thrown up randomly, but down to one now and i was merely seeing if there was a bull out there to try and save the colour!

i thought it was 75% red holstien - 25% MRI

Are they purebred if red? I remember we had red ones years ago but I think they were Dutch or had shorthorn breeding back further. I have never seen a red BF sire or a RC one in AI catalogs.

I may be wrong but do cows need to be RC to have red calves from a red bull

If you have a cow with red gene not related to other cows you cold use red holstain AI If you get a 50/50 red bull calf his offspring would be 75% british
I think they have to be 70 to 80% b fr to be reg as british
Even half holstin would be hardier than 100% holstin
They all came from the same place just the ones that went america were pushed to the limit and keeped inside and turned into big softies that dont like
our rushy wet bogs, stoney roads and wet cold climate.
On the bright side they can improve your milk yeld
You could try ask the british friesan socity about if there are any red bulls or AI

    hi,

out of interest if black is dominant over red, then to get a red freisan bull he will be carrying 2 homozyous recessive genes so only if your normal black cows carry a recessive gene for red also will you stand a chance of red coloured offspring from the mating?

This is true, but what it will do is make the majority of the Calves from a black and red cow carriers of the ressive gene! which in turn would be one of my greater hopes! and when i traced my family of cows i have a good 10 or so of the 100 odd cows have a direct chance of being carriers already. so still looking though!

    grid would look like this.
    Bull is Red Red
Cow is Black Black (alleles that is)

    Red Red

Black (red + black) (Red +black)

Black (red + black) (Red +black)

Given you need both alleles to be red for the colour to present itself but future breeding with any animal with the Red gene would have a 25% chance of yielding a red animail, 50% chance of giving a gene carrier and another 25% chance of just being the straight Black and white

(this is a very simplified answer, the full chart is way to complicated for me to try and type up and to be honest. i wouldnt go bail on my accuracy on it either! )

This explains it well, I have some black/red heifers due to Lawn Boy P Red, he is red and polled. Polled is interesting and could be a niche opportunity
