    Hi,

I have a 2005 Volvo S40 that need some repair work. Does anybody know where the best place to get the repairs done, I would like it done by a dealer or a Volvo specialist. Can anybody recommend some one good who would do a good deal?

    Regards

    Sorry,

    I'm in Dublin.

The repairs that are needed are.

    1. Front brake pads & discs
    2. Rear shock absorber bump stops
    3. Rear brake pads
    4. There is an anti skid warning message on dash
    5. The battery warning light is coming on intermitingly

Any ideas of cost, I spoke to one dealer & the were very dear

I'd head along to Scully Autocare - http://www.yelp.ie/biz/scully-autocare-dublin

They have an ex. Volvo master technician there who can fix anything to do with Volvo's.

Anti Skid may be expensive, and I'd guess the battery light is something to do with the Alternator (gives issues on them).

"Anti-Skid urgent service required" warning usually means that the ABS/Traction Control Unit is knackered. A very common problem on that model S40. If the car has a full Volvo service history then I would go to Volvo and expect a good will gesture from them to replace the unit. You may only have to pay for the labour as the part is pretty expensive (circa €700 afaik).

I would imagine the other things on your list could be sorted by any qualified mechanic as they are standard enough parts.

Quoted between €450 and €750 to get the Alternator replaced in the good lady's V50 last year, Indy and Main dealer prices.

Scully Autocare had 2 on the shelf that the Volvo wizz had reconditioned. My mate who works there fitted it for me on the drive that evening, saving me quite a bit.....................

That anti-skid is usually the ABS pump having gone faulty, and therefore the body control systems are rendered inoperative. Still not a cheap fix though.

I've heard too that Volvo alternators are a bit soft, but funnily enough, the brother came across one where the fault was no more than a duff clutch pulley, and a much cheaper and easier fix. One to watch out for...;)

Who makes the alternators on these? from memory these are LIN bus based on, I'd imagine the same one is used across a number of other vehicles.

The alternators have a ford part number on them ring ford you'll get one usually about 40-50% less then volvo

+1 on the Scully Autocare recommendation. I bought my 01 S40 there for a diagnostics test when I couldn't figure out what the problem was with poor acceleration/power. In fairness they spent quite a bit of time on it thinking it might have been the trottle valve, coils or MAF sensor like I was suspecting. In the end they diagnosed the problem as a weak high pressure fuel pump and estimated that it would cost in the region of €350 to replace. However after pricing the part they were shocked to reveal that the job would cost €960. I was more shocked than they were with this price and left it on the long finger to try and find one in a breakers yard. The sweetener was that since their initial estimate was so out they didn't charge me for the diagnostics test.

That blokes a genius.Worked with him for 5 years. Can fix anything that goes wrong on a Volvo tbh.

The problem with the alternators is that a resisitor in them is blowing. The resisitor can be bought in Maplins dirt cheap for a bag of them.

Op if it is the abs unit thats gone its main dealer only Im afraid--The new unit needs to be programmed to the car.

Theres over a hundred euros in the difference between the Ford and Volvo ones.

I'm not 100% sure but I think they are made by Valeo. If it has Ford part number then it could be Valeo, Visteon, or Denso (if it is a SMART alternator)

We have replaced the unit this week. (Had the same message on the display)
Quote from Volvo Dealer in Cork was 800eur! :-(
I wrote an email to Volvo Ireland and they reduced the price to 640. (part and labour)

Be sure to have the problem checked properly before you assume its the abs unit itself.

I've had two volvo's in the last couple of weeks(a s40 and an s80) both with anti skid service required messages. One was a knackered CV joint which was causing the abs ring to touch the sensor and the other was corrosion the plug connector for the abs sensor.

The ABS sensors where fairly cheap from Volvo.

On the new model S40 its almost always the Abs unit.Ive sold around 15 this year so far.

The S80`s give problems with corrsion on the sensors. The old model s40 used to give problems like you describe with the CV joint--The abs ring used to come loose and throw the light on.

Hellrazer is correct: with the S40/V50 it is always the BCM...

and +1 on the old S40 ABS ring ;)

On a related problem. I have a 05 S40 and have an "Engine System Service Warning" message coming up for over a year. Went to Volvo dealer when it happened intermittently at the start and they could not find any problem. Does anyone know the likey cause of this?

sorry to bump this thread - volvo v50 driver here - getting message 'power system service urgent' coming up on the dash - is that alternator related?

Could be anything from the AC to Power steering motor.
    Is the car running ?

Car is running fine without any noticeable issues

I rang Volvo in spirit who told me sounds like the alternator -

That Electric service require could be ANYTHING.

When it came up on mine it was a loose connection into the fusebox.

Thanks for the info - I've booked it in for a check up next week - I have had the car for 4 years without any problems to date so crossing my fingers it isnt anything major.

    It is the 2.0L (diesel)

Mmmm...It could be a DPF needing recharging--what mileage you got up on it?.

Havent sold many 2.0d alternators--Mainly 1.8s...common problem on them.

If its a DPF recharge budget around 250-300 euros.

If it has a battery symbol then its more than likely the alternator. Is the car starting?Has the battery died?

Could be an alternator belt or tensioner either.

well car was still working ok until about 2 miles out from home this evening - two new messages - anti skid mechanism temporarily off and power steering urgent service - and infact power steering stopped working......

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,937 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hellrazer

Dont mean to sound smart but which one is it?

You first said "power system service urgent" then a battery symbol and now youre saying "anti skid mechanism temporarily off and power steering urgent service"

Any of these messages could be a number of things.

i have all 3 messages now - for the last 24 hours the "power system service urgent" message and as I was driving home this evening the 2 additional messages appeared and my power steering stopped working.

Hi. Im getting the Power system service urgent message on my V50 2.0 D since this evening. From what I have read from my google search I think it may be related to a whining noise that comes from the front left wheel direction. This noise is only audible upto 45 kmph and disappears when turning right. Had the brake pads changed about a month ago and the mechanic couldnt explain what the noise was from, fobbed me off saying it might be a caliper sticking or something.... Anyway I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas if this is likely to point towards the power steering or the alternator. Things are tight and I dont want to pay the kind of prices they charge in the main dealers but I dont want to throw money at it trying to fix it either. Any advice greatly appreciated.
