Is there any confirmed list anywhere of exactly which beef bulls are gone?

    Thanks in advance

Get the feeling that NCBC wont be screaming about which bulls are gone. They're sitting on a lot of 'good' straws from bulls that are now gone. People might be less inclined to take these for fear of introducing IBR into their herd. Just my feeling anyway!

    what about recently used semen?

I would have thought they'd have to destroy any straws from the infected cattle too.

unless they can test the gogo juice itself for IBR

Any straws produced before the last Full Clear IBR test are deemed ok for use. The big question though is - are the straws really safe? The reckon the infected bulls may have had, a latent form of IBR. If it was latent in the bulls, could it be latent in the straws also? Thats the fear!

"IBR is caused by a herpes virus and is often compared in humans to the 'cold sore' virus and the Shingles virus.
Research has shown that the herpes viruses are capable of becoming latent. This means that when an animal is infected with the virus, and clinical signs are cured, the virus can remain in the animal's body and be reactivated by stress."

    "Implications for 2011?
According to NCBC, quantities of semen collected prior to this incident are in stock in sufficient volume to meet spring 2011 demand."

a beast can be a latent carrier but it cant shed the viris when its latent so if he was clear in the last test then anything collected in that time is good to go

If the bull can go from IBR Active to Latent and then back to Active again, how do they know that the bulls werent Active for a short time and then went latent at the time of testing. I take it they dont test every straw for IBR and only test the bulls at set intervals. It this is the case then some infected straws could have slipped through.
Don't honestly know - just asking the question, but NCBC havent really come out with any very strong statment either way yet.

i really think this could make or break ncbc , people are going to be very wary unless there is a full statement made...

I have my own tank and get the local Munster guy to do the AI, I’m not tied to using his bulls that way, plenty of good bulls around

I think there was a thread on here before and 70 cows a year was the cut-off to justify the course, the tank, annual refilling with liquid nitrogen etc no where near that amount of cows unless i went on the road but still like to do it!:)

did ncbc ever identify the source of the infection.if not,why not. my ai man has straws in the tank for me since before the outbreak, i am wondering now are they safe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,101 ✭✭✭bogman_bass

Why not? How are they going to know? anything could have happened. Some vidictive B&$%$d could have have broken in and thrown a handful of dung in for all we know.
My point is, finding the source of a viral outbreak aint that easy. Thats the thing about viris's they dont leave fingerprints or a smoking gun at the crime scene

as for your straws, their fine. If they were collected after the last clear test NCBC would have rang you and replaced them

I dont believe it was vindictive, but a breakdown in preventative measures happened.most of the bulls were infected.something major went wrong! If I am expected to pay E600 for straws,I expect an explenation. pat

You're not obligated to use their bulls, remember this isn't the first time it happened or indeed the the first stud in the world to have an outbreak.
