Sell off the Islands

There are plenty of islands off the coast of Ireland that should be sold off to the Chinese or someone. They could pay big money for each one and be entitled to any oil etc off them. We don't seem to care much for our rural areas, let alone islands. That's 1 way of reducing the almost €200bn mountain of debt.

Didn't we already sell off the rights to the minerals and Gas?

Maybe we could sell our village idiots. That would raise far more money.

What? Sell the likes of The Aran Islands, Achill Island, etc - NO WAY. We've been sold into debt slavery and poverty and you want to sell the very land we walk on. Lets sell the mountains too, shall we?

Well start with the uninhabitated ones and see how it goes. A few bn here and there would do nicely.

    this idea is pure scilly.

It's no surprise that most people are against it initially, but a little thought and insight, it should be given serious consideration. The country is gone anyway, so a few distressed sells would ease the pain for taxpayers.

I agree - a few billions would do nicely. So long as Bertie Ahern has nothing to do with the selling of our islands, and as long as the chinese promise not to eat our pets, maybe we could sell some islands and start celtic tiger number 2

being serious though, there's enough foreign vessels sneaking in and fishing illegally in our waters as it is

how many factory ships do you think they'd register to each and every island with the first week!!??

it'd be like attaching a gigantic hoover to our seabed!

Well heres the thing, the banks are so toxic we could sell county by county and it still wouldn't make a difference. Just last week we learned an extra 5Billion is needed for the banks. I do not trust this final figure one bit.

Good point re fishing, but i think we've lost our fishing rights anyway.

You are right about the banks. Any figure you read, you can guarantee the next one you read will be bigger. Something radical needs to be done at this stage.

If the 5Billion is the final figure, i think your idea might have merit.

it's not to do with our fishing rights, but our lack of ability to police EU fishing grounds ;)

There's going to be a load of semi state sales over the next few years. €200bn of debt though,,,,,bloody hell, almost everything the state owns should go, no point taxing the people. I'd also let the phoenix park etc go.

Dont trust Bertie. He seems to think other countries are charity cases. The sooner somebody puts Ahern sitting on top the spire the better.

They have already sold the idiots - thats us!

Feck it, the islands are the only thing good left about this country

Far away from the misery and humdrum of it all. If i was staying or coming back to this country i'd want to live on one of the islands.

I think liammurs suggestion may be good. Pick one small habitable island and sell it for a few hundred Billion. Give everyone living on that island right now a free NAMA house in return.

Is it smarter to move to one of the islands.
Sell it bugger off.Rest of the country is already sold off and you want to sell more of it.Sure EU and IMF own your ass isnt that enough?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,992 ✭✭✭✭recedite

I think they are already privately owned, except for the Greater Blaskets where there was a big court case to get them open to the public.

BTW "Greater Blaskets" means all the islands round there except for the one owned by CJ Haughey, which oddly enough was exempted from the CPO at the time. ;)

Well theres the thing, if we can sell an island for a few hundred Billion we wont be under the control of the IMF/EU for long. There is a sh1t load of wealthy people in the world that would probably love to own an island.

there aren't too many people with hunderds of billion to spend. a few billion maybe but not 100. what is the plan to sell it off as sovereign territory so they can start their own nation from scratch?

In Soviet Russia, Island sells you off!

Sell the wind and rain battered island off the coast. Sweet mother of god, of all the stupid things I've heard on these boards, this one brings a new card to the game.

Do you have any idea how land ownership works? Tory island off the coast of Donegal is broken up into a few hundred different plots of land, each with a different owner and each with a different price. Even if this absurd idea was entertained, you would have to but out every single piece of land from everyone before you could event think of selling it on to anyone mad enough to want to buy it.

If you made a profit from the sale, you might just cover the legal fees that a mess like that would kick up.

Why not sell the big island in the middle, and we all migrate to the little ones off shore.

I'd say the Chinese would love a presence over here and would pay well over the odds. The yanks and EU wouldn't like that idea, so we'd have a bidding war, and the paddies would make a few quid in the process :)

Could we really do this? Sell it to the Chinese as liammur suggests.
