    hey gang

    hope yer all well

i recenlty graduateed with a degree, and then masters in business information systems in 2009

i am in teh working world, as a graduate since then, and have come to notice that all office jobs, whether you have a degree or not, seem to revolve around MS excel.

to be honest, i am a little dissappointed with this outcome, and was hopeing that working life would have been a little bit more exciting and less monotous than just being in front of excel all day at work

from what i see all graduate jobs, involve excel work.

i am living in germany at the moment, so i am not in contact with irish graduate, so do not know what it is like back home.

can someone please let me know, what i should be expecting to do on a typical work day, lets say 5 years from now, will i still be in front of excel.

is it normal for a graduate to be doing such crappy kinda work, since a lot of this data management work, appears to be more administration kinda stuff than anything else!

i hope this thread isnt too confusing, but all im saying that a typical graduate job appears to almost entirely involve data management of some sort!

    thanks for the comments,
    ed

Probably. They were hardly going to throw you straight in to running the company, and someone has to do that crap. I really hate excel though. Pain in the ass.

OK, hope this isn't too harsh but you're not entitled to an amazing job just because you have a degree. Graduates positions are usually not very exciting. Get your experience, learn as much as you can, then onwards and upwards! :)

PS I hate Excel too. POS.

    This.

Seriously OP 99.9% of people haven't got a clue when it comes to using excel. Get yourself good at it and you suddenly become an invaluable part of the team

It depends what the MS Excel work involves. If it's just data entry, well you know where you stand in the pecking order.

If it's data manipulation, augmentation, mining, etc, then get up to speed with MS Access. It's not going to make you a database administrator, but it will allow you do your job better, faster, etc.

Most people (opening myself to abuse here) have no idea as to the power of Word, Excel, Access, etc.

To end.....MS Excel is a much abused tool ;)

    DFD.
