    Must be!

I think the old transit was a complete xj220 with a transit body not just the engine in the back

I would not even think about trading the 01 Mondeo, it will be worth sweet feck all to a dealer. Sell it privately, with a fresh NCT and if it is in decent nick, priced realistically it should sell easily enough.

Then go in and buy the 08 Mondeo with no trade-in so that you can negotiate a straight deal. You will do better than trading the old car.

I'll second that. Only way to go.

From experience their no rockets..... Although if you pushed it off a cliff it would hit the bottom pretty quick.

I've a '02 115bhp diesel also. Not a rocket no. Surprised to hear one described as one. It's a bit slower than a 130bhp A4 and faster than a 1.6 focus if that's any indication.

Test drive the 1.8Tdci before you do anything. You'll realise that there is a gaping chasm in the torque curve and that it's a pig to drive around. Still have fond memories of my 01 Mondeo Zetec 115bhp.............

Book value on the 08 Mondeo is €15,500. Probably looking at €13,000 to change or thereabouts.

I wouldn't buy a 1.8tdci Mondeo unless I absolutely had to. Not good to drive and certainly not a rocket.

What's important to you? Performance, size, comfort?

The Mondeo was also available in 2.0 litre and 2.2 litre TDCi, both are superior to the 1.8 TDCi but are much rarer to find in Ireland second hand.

If we're describing 115ps Mondeo diesels as "rockets" I doubt the performance is too much of an issue. :)

But if someone refers to their car being a rocket rather than their car being massive, then certainly the perception of speed is important.
To compete against that I'd suggest a Passat 2.0TDI, Octavia 2.0TDI or Insignia 2.0CDI 160. All relatively nippy enough.

The Mondeo the OP has is also nippy and a great car to drive (again, relatively).

The new Mondeo is huge and doesn't have the same feel/benefits of the OP's one, but if he's focusing on a Mondeo I'd steer him away from the 1.8TDCI.

    My €0.02, that's all.

The 1.8Tdci Mondeo is not as bad as some people here are saying. 125Bhp, gives you what you need when you want to over take. There is plenty of room in it, it is bigger than the >07 Mondeo. I am driving 1 for nearly a year now and it is a good car to drive, holds the road well, does around 50mpg.

OP: Try and get a 6sp one.

Compared to what? I was talking ot a guy the other day who has had an Audi A4, chipped to i think 160bhp, a Passat Sportline 140 / 160bhp. He said he had a Mondeo on rental and though it was mush better than both.

I don't see how. It bogs down really badly at lower revs and can be hard to get away from lights etc. It's underpowered and runs out of wheeze quickly.

I'm comparing it to the 2.0TDCI Mondeo, 2.0TDI Passat, 2.0CDI Insignia, 2.0TDI Octavia (and possibly the 1.9TDI, although that has its negative points too).
I'd even think the 1.6D in the S40/S80 is a better drive than the 1.8TDCI Mondeo.
I don't remember the 1.5DCI Laguna being much better or worse than the Mondeo.

Much as I love the previous model Mondeo, I agree with Chris on the current one - especially with the 1.8Tdci.

The car as a whole feels too big, even though it's not that much bigger than the Passat/Insignia (I have the same feeling about the 407 even though it's not as big as the Mondeo). The 1.8Tdci has terrible, terrible lag in 125ps guise. It's slightly better in the LX with the 100ps model. Bogs down at low speed, and is slow to respond even at motorway speeds.

It's a mighty car for steady speed motorway work, and after a Dublin - Cork run I wouldn't have any pain or numbness you might get in competitor cars, but if you have overtake someone on the motorway, you need to make sure you've got a big enough gap to give the engine time to respond.

Ford were in with us last week, and even they said it's best not to mention the 1.8 in the Mondeo. Let's hope the new 1.6 is better!

All that said, there isn't much else that gives the same value for money in that age of car.

i was buying a new car in 2008, Drove the 1.8TDCI and tought it very dead, I liked the car so waited the 4 weeks and paid the extra € 2,200 for a 2.0TDCI 140bhp

    2001, Saloon Mondeo, 2ltr TD ZETEC Diesel, 115BHP. .. a rocket basically.

This is whats wrong with the average Irish motorist.

115bhp diesel is considered a rocket.

Granted the Turbo Lag is terrible, but, I would drive mainly motorways and tend not to be invovled a traffic light grand prix. So for what I need, it is fine. Once the turbo kicks in, I find it grand for overtaking and motorway crusing. I do little or no city driving so the taken off asspect is not a problem. Sure it's not meant to be rocket...

listen lads, great replies, interesting to read,

im test driving the 08 mondeo this eve, and as someone asked, yes it is the 6 speed. .

the 01 115BHP is by far enough to over take, yes u can go way up, but i dont invisage the passat driver of a 140BHP holding me up, ,,

we all agree on one thing, the person holding us up is doing 60-70KM per hr. ..

ill report back on my findings. . .

Im telling ya, if its like my 01 mondeo ill be happy. .

    ok guys,

    heres how it went,

first thoughts, big car, seems bigger than my old one,
love the space you have in front, the dash falls away, i love this, as oppose to BMW their dash is like an RSJ lying arcoss the dash lol. . .
car was in excelent, spotless inside and out
    4 new tyres,
alloys, 1 had a small scratch, wont bother me,
4 marks on the body, 3 on bumper actuall, one on door handle

its a 6 speed, Zetec, very smooth,
as i only drove it a few miles, I think the gap between the gears is shorter, like ill be changing quicker (this is prob normal)
seem to have suffient power for over taking, (had for me anyay. took 2 cars and left them for dust.

power compared to me 01, prob about 90-95% of what the old one has.
i know i called this a Rocket so i could get attention, but to be honest, im a bit suspect about that 01, i think it was tinkered with., My wife and I you see had the same car, same everything except colour, and her car while powerful, only clicked in once the revs went near 2, or something like that, but my one was almost like 2.2 petrol. . I was always wondering why. . and even when i put milleroil fuel wash in, GGss it friggen got more giddy . .

anyway. . to make a long story short, i bought the car,
wife liked it, i liked it. and happy out. its like any ford i had, a very sturdy car that weighs heavy on the road, and almost hugs it without slowing it down. .
