Dry Scalp v Colour

    Hi!!

I got a beautiful rich colour in my hair about 6 weeks ago but my scalp is really dry, and the only thing to soothe it is Head and Shoulders. Needless to say, within about 3 washes my colour had faded and now looks really dull and limp. I got the Swarskof shampoo for coloured hair but my scalp is tearing itchy and falling off!

Any suggestions of a shampoo that will be nice to my scalp but keep colour rich? I need to get the colour re-done in the coming week but dont want to fork out a fortune for it to fade really quick again.

    Thanks :)

Head & Shoulders Colour Care should do the trick!

I use the Herbal Essences Ignite My Colour and I find it works really well! I don't have very sensitive skin so I can't say whether or not it'll irritate your scalp but your colour shouldn't fade!

When did you get your itchy scalp, was it just after you got your hair done or a few days/weeks after? Does your scalp react to scratching? Is it sore/sensitive when you do scratch?

I reacted badly to dye/bleach over a year ago and the hairdresser sent me Revlon sos calm shampoo, it was very light for my scalp and eased the itching and burning on my scalp. I found it brilliant and its for sale in terrisales shops!

    Hi OP,

Head and Shoulders is well known for actually creating more dandruff long term so it may well be the cause of your problems. Try a gentler shampoo, the Revlon shampoo Squeekyduck mentioned is great. I've used Aussie brand shampoo and conditioner since it first came out here, and i find it great, especially as my skin is sensitive. You may also want to try some of the Lush shampoo's, i've heard great things about their shampoo bars.

I'm assuming your hair was coloured with red dye or red tone, which will never last as long as other colours. I was a redhead for a few years and used to buy the sachets of wash-in colour to pep it up a bit in between colours.
I tried some of the colour glaze shampoo's like John Frieda, but long term they tend to leave a lot of residue in the hair and you end up with flat and lifeless hair. Polytar shampoo is great for removing residue, and restores great shine to coloured hair, but i wouldn't recommend using it regularly.

Edit: on checking it out, it seems that Head and Shoulders can strip or fade the colour from your hair, its possible it may be the cause of your troubles!!

Hi, I use Selsun anti dandruff shampoo, i find it amazing and wouldn't use any other, highly recommend it!

    Here's a link to buy in Ireland - http://www.compare.ie/594-819467-selsun-dandruff-shampoo.htm

    Good luck!

It could be the SLS in the Shampoo that's irritating your scalp, it makes mine super dry and itchy. Try switching to a Sulphate free Shampoo, afaik the Boots Naked range has none. It will be gentler on your scalp and won't strip the colour. I also use Coconut Oil to hydrate my scalp and soothe it.

Ara ye're as good as gold, thank you all!!

Its a beautiful red colour, but im a natural ginger (went for a shade darker) and it literally washed out in 1 or 2 washes. I heard about the H&S curse before too, so i do reckon i need to steer clear of it!

Im gonna try Revlon .. we dont have Aussie in New Zealand (imagine!) and i heard the Elvive colour care (red bottle) is quite good too!? May try that.

Problem is that John Frieda and those shampoo's here are about $20.00 ... country is a joke!

Thanks though - will report back when im a beautiful red head again :)

A bit late but I use Dove colour care - I have a dry sensitive scalp and eczema so it took me forever to find a shampoo that didn't wash my colour out within a week or two or make my scalp raw. Cheap as chips too!

I was told to use this by my GP while i was on anti biotics for a scalp complaint.I think the combo of the tablets and this shampoo caused dry scalp as I never had it before.I would aviod it if i was the op.

On a side note what shampoo would ye recommend for dry scalp if colour fade is not an issue(don't have my hair dyed)
