DAE Not feel one iota better for taking multi-vitamins? e.g. berocca etc.

I'm beginning to believe that you should only take vitamins if you have some sort of serious illness. I mention this because I was talking to a friend of mine and he takes them all the time, I told him how I felt about vitamins and that they're a scam and he thought I was mad.

I get vitamins from the food I eat.

I find it a lot less hassle & a lot more pleasant.

I dunno, my mam used to make me eat those super-ted vitamins and they were fantastic :D

But yeah I know what you mean, I eat plenty of veg and enough fruit so why the need, we didn't have vitamins 60 years ago and people were doing fine, so why the big health craze now?

Vitamins don't make you feel better. Unless you have a vitamin deficiency illness.
You'll notice a real physical difference in how you feel if you eliminate added sugar and salt from your diet.

I noticed in the past that it takes a week or so for them to kick in

How do you know its the vitamins working? surely your body metabolises vitamins at the same rate as it metabolises fats/sugars/salts etc. it doesn't make sense that it would take a week for them to work.

well no the body does not metabolise vitamins the same way it metabolises foods

fats and sugars are mainly used as energy sources there is one essential fat that the body cannot make itself and that is probably used for that purpose the rest are used to create energy

Vitamins are often cofactors for enzymes or involved in processes within the body so you might have plenty of vitamin A you might have no vitamin C and you might need a certain amount of vitamin C for a certain process to run efficiently so it might be a case that you need to get the levels of vitamins up to a certain level for them to kick in.

    Really? :D

Are you sure you didn't mean vitamin supplements?!!

I know what you mean though. People didn't take supplements years ago as most of the food they ate was fresh, unprocessed foods that had all the vitamins they required.

The thing about supplements is however, is that they are only of any use if you are getting the right variety of vitamins from your food anyway. The supplement what you are already eating but cannot be used as a replacement for food vitamins.

i still don't think it would take a week but I could be wrong.

Regardless I have taken vitamins in the past for extended periods and it made no difference to my health.

Yeah I suppose that's true, but that brings up another question, how lazy do you have to be to not cook yourself a proper dinner every day?

    Quite lazy.

But there are plenty of people who don't... hence the success of ready made meals & take aways.

During the winter, I take Vitamin D as I'm in work pretty much the entire time during daylight hours.

After being ill, I also take a range of vitamins for a few a week or so to help counteract any deficiencies that occured due to the illness.

I really don't know if they do any good, but I don't think they can hurt if taken sporadically, so I'd rather be safe.

I'm against regular usage though, as I think you'd end up with too many vitamins in your blood.

I take all my vitamins as suppositories.

It helps absorb them into my system better. I want to get as much of the goodness out of them as possible.

That's just me though, I'm very anal about things.
