Car hit while parked in car park

    Hey all,

Quick question, my wife was having lunch with some friends in the dropping well and when she came out after someone had bumped the driver door leaving a huge dent and left without leaving a note\contact details.

She went into the pub to see if they have any cameras so she can get the reg but they said that the don't have any cameras on the car park.

So are we stuck putting this on our own insurance even though it was completely outside our control and not our fault? Apparently it's going to hit us for 2 years on our NCB..

    Any advice\info greatly appreciated!

Pay for it yourself. And let it go or it'll eat you up..

Did she have to pay to use the car-park?

Can't see that there's much you can do. Just discovered a dinge in my passenger door yesterday, obviously picked it up in a car park somewhere but what can you do?

Bought my first ever brand new car in June 1996, it was a Fiat Bravo, great car. Picked up two of the ladies from the office the same day and we went to the Dropping Well for lunch to celebrate. While we were sitting at a table overlooking the car park a lady in a Peugeot scraped the wing of my car while pulling out - the frigging car was less than an hour old! It was all sorted later, no big deal but if I had high blood pressure it probably would have killed me.

Don't think the Dropping Well charges, they're too far from offices and shops to need to do that. Whether they do or not, they probably have a disclaimer up saying park at your own risk.

I'll be paying the princely sum of €1,800 tomorrow for dinging a really expensive car. I pulled out of a parking space, it was all my fault and I would've left my details but the owner actually saw it happening. I could pay on my insurance but it is such hassle getting insurance if you claim, it really is. I dinged another car 3 years ago, claimed on insurance to pay and I was at the mercy of the insurance companies.

I'm a great believer in the the phrase the wheel turns. Put the agro in a bubble and blow it away. And pay for the damages yourself. I know, grrrrrrrr, but if that's the worst thing that'll happen to you in this life, take it.

Damage is big enough that we can't afford to pay for it ourselves, will have to put it on the insurance.. Not letting it get to me, just frustrating that there's no form of protection for people who are in this situation. We get stuck for a bill for an accident that we weren't even there for.

And no, the car park was a free car park so I am sure the dropping well wouldn't be responsible (and I wouldn't feel right asking them to pay either although I do wish they'd put a camera on the car park!)

Scum of the earth. May they rot in hell.

Herself's car had similar experiences recently. Both times parked in our estate (once in the snow, once previously that she hadn't got around to fixing). Luckily the same quarter panel was hit on both occasions. Cost 860 + VAT to fix. But it would have been a 50% no claims discount wiped out (worth about 500 quid) and 300 euro excess anyway, so not worth it. She paid up and got on with it. Delighted with the work done.

Pay it yourself and move on, you'll be happier for it. Not really what your insurance is for, it's gamed against you making any sort of claim.

what is the car?, it may work out alot cheaper in the long run, to either fix the door or replace it with a 2nd hand unit as apposed to going through your insurance

this is bs tbh, why should the OP pay for damage on the car that was the result of a third party.

whats the friggin point of insurance then...

its easy to say, ohhh pay the damage and chalk it down to experience blah blah...

sure, not a bother, going to cost well over a grand or so.

this is the reason why most of the time in a car park i park like an asshole,id rather take up two spots than fork out a good lump of my savings, the new thing i started doing recently was taking down the licence plate numbers of the car next to me

that sounds really strange dosent it

One way to prevent this is to park further away from the entrance where there is loads of empty spaces and park where there are no other cars taking up *ONE* fcuking space at a time.
Because people who park like assholes might get their car dinged on purpose for being obnoxious bastards.
I understand having your car damaged is annoying and any person laying their hands on another one's car should be shot, no judge no jury.
But taking up two spaces is up there amongst it.

It's a sad state when people are so pathetic to ding cars on purpose.

Parallel park is the only way I do it. I'll drive around and around to find one. But I have had expensive damage done a few times and don't want a repeat of that.

I just wish to state that I wasn't referring to me.
Dinging another persons car is terrible, it has happened to me and I would never do it to anyone.
But there are people who just don't care, if you don't want your car dinged the only solution is to park nowhere near any other parked or moving cars or keep the car in the garage where it is safe.
Taking it out into traffic means it's at risk.;)
The only other way is to take it out of the garage and have the valet park in a secure car par it at your destination.
Personally I try to take the middle ground, I don't squeeze it between two mammy wagons (you WILL find 4 new dings when you get back), park further back in the car park where it's not too crowded and other, likeminded people park for the same reason, but I would never dream of taking up two spots.
People who take up two spots should get two tickets or get clamped twice, it's just a pet hate, why be obnoxious.
I can only picture the person, probably jumps the queue at the till, uses the disabled loo without washing their hands, never tips at restaurants where they divvy up the bill with a calculator and buys flowers at a petrol station on their way home.:p

i'd recommend getting no claims bonus protection on your policy. that way, you can have 1 or 2 claims in a year without it affecting your NCB. It only costs about €0 for the year. i had an accident in the snow last year, skidded into a parked car, wrote mine off and caused a lot of damage to the other car. didn't remember i had no claims protection so was a nice surprise to find out

Because the loss of NCB plus whatever excess there is will likely cost more than the repair, unless it's really bad. Sh1t situation to be in due to somebody else's dishonesty. Personally I'd leave it if the damage wasn't too bad, at least until I could save up to fix it.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Op your telling me only one door is damaged? is it just a big dent or is paintwork damaged too? did you get many quotes for the work? Can a smart repair team not sort it out? I got work done up north for 5 times the cheapest price I got down here, and the job is A1!

OP why not ask the place if they'd mind you putting up a few posters looking for witnesses? Offer €100 for information leading to finding the culprit and see what happens. There may be regulars who saw something.
