Just wondering if there would be any interest in this? Some race this year, just one discipline to concentrate on and a good session after! Perhaps more than one team, could be fun :D

Event in mind? I'm up for it since smaller races are not a priority. I'd love to do Kilkee but its too soon before my IM, however no probs in doing a leg of it :)

You mean have one person run, one person swim and one person cycle or is it some other format? If it's the former, I could be up for a run-leg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,830 ✭✭✭catweazle

You could have a serious team for that if you could get the right guys on board. Why not do it for the Humbert Challenge, certainly it would be good prep work for the lads doing Galway 70.3 to get a good swim, cycle or run under their belts.

I would fancy my chances against a combined team of Interested, Cunavalos and Macanri, not a chance of them getting under 5.30 :D

Could be tempted, not sure on kilkee (might be doing a relay there already :D)

I'll take the bike leg of the opposing team then. Wouldn't mind an all out crack at a bike leg :D I'll have Abhainn as my runner and Tunney as my swimmer :)

I propose a handicap system. Tunney cant wear goggles, mcos gets no saddle and abhainn runs barefoot? Seems only fair :D

I would nearly drop out and watch that show from the sidelines, a real clash of the titans there!

Great to see some interest. Kilkee would be out for me, the Euro's are on in Spain. Many of the tri events have a relay race so take your pic I guess. The Humbert could be a good one but again maybe too near Euro's for me. July would suit for sure, or maybe an end of season in Blacksod Co. Mayo - tough course.

Would it be a good idea to mix the teams so it would be a tight affair? I agree though, there would be a serious team or two from boards.

I would be up for this as long as it does not clash with any planned events. I will do the transitions!!

Blacksod is a good one, actually thinking of doing it myself this year again. Weather last year was terrible, but nice setup for a weekend away.

Definitely put me on the crap team though!

I'll be interested for events in the South West. Count me in for the swimming part.

As well as the relay option if there is a sprint or OLY tri event coming up that has a good few doing it we could get teams of 2 or 3 (mixed abilities) competing against each other with the combined lowest finishing time the winner. Think of the bragging rights!!

EDIT: Something like the Joey Hannon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,184 ✭✭✭El Director

    May I also suggest:

1st: Decide on an event. I'll stick with Blacksod, end of the season, great event, beautiful location and apparently great after party too! But wherever.

2nd: Have a simple table and in it put your preferred discipline (maybe somebody could come up with that)

3rd: We then do an open draw for Team 1, Team 2, etc.....

    Comments?

I've heard of a three legged race before in the school fun day but never a three legged ironman! The swim and bike would be interesting to watch :D

I suspect there might be a lot more people interested in the run leg than the other two, but put me down for this if you need someone for this. I am a very slow cyclist and would certainly drown if I attempted the swimming leg.

If that was the case we could always re-jig the the teams with the tri heads taking on the swim. Personally I would perfer the bike but do the run if possible (especially if it was close to DCM) but if swimmers were needed I'd happily do that too :)

You could get all interested to PM you with a 4 digit number. Lob them into excel and sort by the 4 digit number column and there is your random selection. You could post it too before incase the interested-el director-bazman team throws up a suspected fix :D

Not sure I get you shotgun re the "sort by 4 digit number column' and posting it up first. But it sounds good :p Actually I cound just assign numbers 1 to n as people PM me and then run a randbetween(1,n) funtion, that'd work right?

First maybe we should take a vote on possible races?

If there was a very low level beginner's team, I'd be up for the cycle. I've done 2 duathlons (slowly!) and the cycling isn't great but at the very least I have a bike... Would be a good motivation to get back on it over the next few months!

+ 1. However, as I don't have a bike, and only swim 2 weeks of the year (when on hols in +30 degrees heat), running (not very fast) would be the only thing I'd be anyway suitable for :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,241 ✭✭✭ronanmac

This is a great idea, would love to take part in a relay team. Loads of ways to mix up and create teams... do you go all out as a team and pick people based on their strongest discipline, or make it more of a challenge and assign people according to their weakest discipline? Do you mix up the "pro's" and beginners, or put together beginner teams and elite teams (and everything inbetween!)? Or how about teams based on geography? I'd ask for a place on the Galway team, but I think I'd be a bit low down on the list of candidates, ability-wise!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,034 ✭✭✭griffin100

    My 2c:)
    1. A 3 level graded system to be developed for each discipline - e.g. swim level 1 - sub 20 min 750m / level 2 sub 18 min / level 3 sub 15 min (rough example)
    2. Every interested person to submit a grade for each discipline that they are interested in
    3. A randomnly selected team to have 1 person at each grade
    4. A SD event to be selected - SD would be better as differences between individuals would be minimised
    5. Try it out
    Jaysus that's complicated:p

While the Belmullet race is supposed to be excellent - I am from Galway and it is over two hours alone for me to get up there, so Dubs, eastern areas etc will be looking at a serious drive there. It is in the middle of nowhere

Maybe an easier location to get to, Loughrea ;) perhaps which is maybe less than an hour and a half from Dublin down the motorway and is in September as well

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,100 ✭✭✭DustyBin

I reckon ye are both looking at the wrong end of the season there lads, seems like a good bit of interest in it why wouldn't ye want to get a race in earlier? Maybe do a later race as well if the first one goes well?
(nice subtle plug there CW ;))

Good man Dusty, I regretted it after that plug as I would prefer to race that one myself if I am let. Early in the year is grand for me as well!

I like the graded idea griffin. So maybe if people just PM me ave swim, cycle and run (sprint distances) times we could then sort out the grades. Also indicate your preferred discipline. If you do only sport then PM me too. So for example:

    Swim (750m): 13min (2)
    Bike (20k): 35min (1)
    Run (5k): 21min (3)

In brackets your preferred discipline. Also state which month you'd perfer, May - Sept.

Great idea El D. I don't mind which way it is organised and would be willing to do whichever disciplines suited - ie if less swimmers then I could slot in there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 583 ✭✭✭NeedsTraining

    Like the idea.

    Count me in.

Favoured discipline is the after party

Guys start PMing me with above details, I'll try to sort them out then.

Ok I have 4 now, keep 'em coming guys!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,184 ✭✭✭El Director

Right guys/gals I haven't forgot about this, just haven't had the time to do anything about it. So this weekend I will sit down and see whats what. Those of you who PM'd me I still have ye're preferences, for anybody that didn't PM me-do so before the weekend with:

    1) Time of season pref
    2) Order of pref of disciplines.

    El D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,184 ✭✭✭El Director

    Flip it!

Only remembered this today  sorry guys :o

Been so busy this summer. Anybody still interested in it? It isn't too late, I know Blacksod do relays and it's a challenging course. I still haven't decided to race it straight but we'll see. It's a bit far though and I think if one was going there to just do one discipline then the main reason to go would be for the after party as it is supposed to be good. Could be a good way to end the season :)

    Sorry again dudes.

    I only saw this now.

I would be interested in joining an ironman or 1/2 ironman team for next season if anyone's interested.

On this topic, sotra, I was asking to do the running leg of a tri relay team by someone I dont get on with at all recently at a party..

"..I know we dont like each other, but I was wondering if you would do me a favour and do this really long run at the end of a tri race in the middle of nowhere...."

Alas, I was doing my hair that day :pac:

Havent seem this thread before but I would be interested next year as well. Getting a few boardsie relay teams in one race would be good. Too busy the rest of this tri season to fit anything in.

We have a work entry in the musgraves triathlon in Sept so if we cannot get all the slots filled I could be looking for two victims to fill slots for the first boards tri relay team!!
