Diesel Advice

    Hi all,

I'll be moving to the UK shortly for a new job and I will have a fairly sizeable commute, around 100km round trip, each day. About 95% of it will be on a motorway. I'm looking to get a good diesel car, over in the UK, for between £3000 and £4000, the cheaper the better really. My main concerns are fuel economy, but also reliability and comfort as I will be spending plenty of time in the car.

I've never had a diesel and currently drive a 06 Mondeo 1.8 petrol, which I really like and find very comfortable to drive, but it does eat petrol.

I'm just looking for advice on what diesel cars would be best in that price range? Does engine size make a big difference in fuel economy, for example a 1.6 vs a 2.0l, would the smaller engine be wiser our would I need to match engine size with car size/weight, etc. to get the best out of it?

    Any help appreciated.

Mondeo diesel may be worth a peak, £4000 will get you lots of car in the UK.

Yeah I'm been looking at a few Mondeo's online. Wouldn't mind having another one, had two already! :D

Any other make/model suggestions? I'll have a good 10 days in England to get a car before starting the job so want to have a look at as many cars as I can.

    Jaguar X type
    MG ZT
    Audi A4 or Audi A6

If you want loads of mpg a diesel Clio may suit.

Not the most exciting car, but big, comfortable and a lot of metal for little wonga.

My vote goes to a mondeo. They really are good value in the UK. I know you want something different but they are cheap and reliable diesel cars. Parts are easy to get also.

If you are doing mostly motorway driving then a larger engine will do it more comfortably than a smaller engine.
