Was out lamping the other night and I had a brain wave.
When a fox circles you in order to get a scent and instead of getting your scent it got a mixed scent of both you and rabbit?
To do this I was thinking if you got a bottle of rabbit scent, which is used for training dogs and put it on a rag or something and have it behind you or what ever way the wind is blowing so the fox gets the scent of rabbit and might be inclined to get closer.

    Could this work??

yes it works we used to shoot a couple of rabbits when we started for the night belly them and carry them with us often if you were squeeling and mr f was downwind or worked himself to down wind a quick waggle of the rabbit and he'd come in like a train especially if you thump the ground gently he thinks there is a life and death struggle going on

Pat 'The Warrener' does this already.
If you look at his DVD's or youtube videos it must be there somewhere, or I wouldn't know!
Think it was one of his DVDs.

Id say the fox would probably still get your scent, unless you were willing to pour it over your face, hands, cloths maybe!!!

Some of the Yanks actually spray deer urine in their mouth to give there breath the scent too.

But they will also get the scent of the rabbit and might make them less wary and the temptation of a real rabbit or the chance of a free dinner that smells like a rabbit.

That is just a bit far I think.

Can of lynx beats rabbit any day. I wouldn't chance letting the fox down wind, he's gonna smell ya.

But what if he gets a mixed scent of you and rabbit. If the fox is hungry would he not chance it for a free meal?
If you were staving would you chance it?

I don't wear deodorant out Stalking, and a baby wipe removes the bacteria that causes human scent from armpits.

In regards to foxes smelling a hunter? If they are like a dog there smell is uncanny

Rabbit wee is relatively easy to get if you shoot a few bunnies and gut them carefully

Would not be a fan of the pee smell though

Go out some night, let the fox smell you and try and call him, see what happens. Same principle. I happen to be marginally smarter than a fox, so no, I wouldn't chance it :pac:

If he is that hungry he wouldn't bother winding you. A fox that is circling you is already cautious so when he smells

    Your deodrant
    Tack's "scentless" baby wipe
    The car/jeep air-freshener
    Cigarette
    Coffee
    Detergent
    Gun Oil
    Carbon from your rifle
    Smelly boots or wellies
    Greasy hair
    Hand wash
The garlic you had for lunch
    e.t.c

mixed with rabbit he will probably not stay around.

If he's circling you, cut him off or try and stop him with a whistle, squeak or bark

Exactly, if it's not broke, don't fix it. The aim of the exercise is to shoot the fox, not let him wind ya.

Just the other night I was out and a fox winded me but never moved. Either away or towards me so thats why I was wondering if he got a scent of a rabbit would he have moved

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,590 ✭✭✭Tackleberrywho

you can get scentless wipes (some with sensitive skin are allergic to scented wipes)

However, as Vegeta said there are so many smells that would give you away.

Although I would say Sound is your biggest enemy (and sight)

I sat watching a bunny on the brow of a hill today for 10 minutes, I never moved, prone; yet after a while he just bolted.

    What spooked him?
    Who knows..........

Think it was one of his DVDs.

indeed he does, he leaves his pot off scent out with his decoy, so when charles circles, the scent off his concoction wiffs past the lamper instead off the lampers scent.

A great one to mask your smell is to "smoke" your outer clothing . Build a bit of a smokey fire with leaves and twigs and the like and stand in the smoke for good bit. Foxes don't realy fancy the smell of smoke but they tend to fancy the smell of human far less.

And if you don't fancy red eyes and a sore throat just hang your coat and trouser in the smoke.

Keep it simple, your hunting foxes not lil leprecauns.

You miss a fox every now and again, there'll be plenty of more. Just keep it easy, have a back drop to you, wind in your face, wear camo, stay quiet unless your calling with whatever method and put the lead in his head when its safe to do so. :)

Foxes are colour blind, so pink DPM would still work :D

my cousin uses a Dictaphone of chickens squawking to call foxes!

    This is my approach.

Kill a couple of rabbits, belly them and leave sprawled out. Use a remote UCaller, and leave beside your rabbits. Now retreat so that your just in RF range of your UCaller, preferably in suitable cover, and of course positioned down wind of bait. Now sit and wait. I've tried this on numerous occasions with good results. Sometimes he'll get downwind and try and 'wind' you which can put him right on your lap!!

I never thought of combining dead bunnies with a Ucaller

I got a few magpies over the Christmas with a Bunny as bait

I often wondered would a magpie call attract a fox, as in the wild they normally come hand in hand

That would be worth a try I have to say.

But usually when you here a magpie its when it has seen a fox or something else and is warning other magpies or animals of the impending danger.

Why would a fox want to come to a magpie call when all it will do is alert other animals in the area that something is going on and to stay away?

magpie = Carrion near by to Mr Fox?

I'm just wondering mind, As I said, I have a friend who has chickens making a racket on a tape and that seems to bring foxes running

Any time I was ever out after bunnies and heard magpies I saw a fox soon after, I'm wondering could the fox try and steal the magpies dinner perhaps

It could work. maybe we should conduct a test on Saturday?
Get a rabbit and try a magpie call and see if any fox turns up and if not we will try a the rabbit distress call to make use of the rabbit ;)

In these recessionary times there's probably an opening there for some budding entrepreneur:

    - deer urine toothpaste

    - rabbit urine toothpaste

    - deer urine deodorant

    - rabbit urine deodorant

    - socks with rabbit urine scent

    - socks with deer urine scent

somebody 'pi$$ed off' with the state of the economy may be tempted to give it a go!!!
