Can anyone recommend a good budget printer that has driver support for linux machines.. I'm just going to be using it for printing college notes so b&w is more than enough tbh

also - any model that you can get cheap refills for is pretty much a must

My old printer has just given up and I'd like to just get a printer that runs of linux because printing is basically the only thing I use my windows for at all lately...

It'd just be so much handier to have a printer that can run straight from linux...

any advice would be apprecitated - thanks :)

If it's any use to you I ran a HP PSC700 for years on linux with printers available directly in the ubuntu repositories and a CUPS front end.

Well, my advice would be :

    Samsung ML2010
    Samsung ML-1665
    Samsung ML-2525
    Samsung ML-1915
    Brother HL-2035

I tried them all in Debian, and they work flawlessly, and the last one works perfectly with cups, besides the toner is quite reasonable priced, and of course you can refilled it, you can't go wrong with any of that options

I've got a Epson SX515W which works great with CUPS.

EDIT: Only tried it via the network. Never actually tried it via USB. I assume it works though.

Cannon mp460 in ubuntu. Really, look for a good budget printer first (don't buy it yet) and then check for compatibility.

What version of linux are you using?

Pretty much anything from HP is supported by hplip, which usually comes with your distro and is easily installed if not.
I bought a HP Officejet all-in-one in Lidl a year and a bit ago for 70-odd euro, no mention at all of Linux on the box but it is fully supported for printing, scanning and faxing under hplip.
Usually any OSX compatible printer will use CUPS (which Apple now own) and will therefore work with any Linux distro. In theory it's possible that a disk with a proprietary OSX driver is included, in which case you'd be out of luck under Linux, but pretty unlikely these days.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

+1 to anything from HP ......... but I would say a 3-in-1 rather than just a printer.
I saw a wireless 3-in-1 from HP for €60 a couple of months ago.

The HP site is very helpful in determining whether the particular device is supported or not. Probably the same for other manufacturers.

So I would say make a short list and then check for Linux compatibility ...... and of course select one which is fully supported.

C4585 - All-In-One network printer, also wireless which comes very handy from time to time. Works perfectly on my Ubuntu 10.10

I have hp c5180 + ciss (continuous ink supply system?).
Printing is _cheap_ and I'm printing mainly photos.

I'd say go for any printer that can work with "ciss" (search on ebay)

If you want college notes, a black and white laser printer
will give you the cheapest cost per page over the next few years.

Linux printing uses 'CUPS', which as ninja900 says is the same system now used by OSX, so a good tip is to see if the box says "Supports Windows and Macintosh". I didn't know that Apple actually owned cups. They have an exception to the GPL license it is normally distributed under, which allows them to make changes to it without releasing them. I didn't know that they had granted themselves that particular exemption!

You should use the openprinting database at linuxfoundation.org to get a final verdict.

Both HP and Samsung tend to produce linux compatible printers of this type with good results,
but Samsung toner refills are cheaper per page by quite a bit!

You're best bet is HP. If your distro doesn't support it then go to HP for their HPLIP driver. That's what I had to do to get my new HP Photosmart c310 to work with Kubuntu 10.10. Now it both scans and prints wirelessly over my network :)

I'm using the HP Photosmart C3180 and it works out of the box with Trisquel for printing and scanning. I think it was about €50.
