I have enough money from my birthday to buy any phone I want. Seeing as any smart phone these days is a pretty big investment I want to make sure I'm getting the best option out there.

I've been looking at the HTC Desire HD but are there any new Android phones coming out soon that I could prefer?

Not currently :) Wait a month or so to see what comes out. Loads of New HTC, Samsung and LG Phones coming out soon :) Unless you want to be stuck with last years phone id suggest just taking the bite and holding off till the new goodies come out :)

In all the years I have been buying gadgets, I can tell you that there is never a good time to buy. There is always something better around the corner.

Is the Galaxy S II out yet? I'd say it's a grand time to buy an iPhone. I don't think the next one's due for a while.

As for Android phones it's more difficult to say. Google has released the next Nexus and I don't think it's particularly impressive but I've been hearing good things about the next offering from Samsung.

I think it is definitely not the time to be buying a tablet though. I expect the next generation of them will be soon enough and much better than what is available now.

How do you go about buying one then? What I mean is that I was thinking about switching over to billpay on say a 12 month contract but I heard that you will not be offered an upgrade until say the 10 month of your contract and if I were to go to 3 I would have to wait 16 or 20 months to avail of an upgrade.

+1 - Is it ever a good time to buy gadgets/technology as there is always something else out in the following month!

I love my HTC Desire HD btw. Really good phone.

Its very true that theres never a perfect tiem to buy any piece of technology but there are better times than others! I, for one would wait a month or two and get a galaxy s II, or even if not that there are literally a load of nice sounding new SE and LG androids, all running gingerbread too, so thats something to wait for. By april most of these should have landed and there should be plenty choice.

n terms of smarphones, theres pretty much nothing that has come onto the market, even the nexus s was launched 2 months ago, which is a long time in smartphones

Indeed, this goes without saying! I've been out of the smartphone world for a while though, ever since my iPhone got 'misplaced'. I'm worried all the bigger and better stuff might jump out from the corner as soon as I sign my 12-month Desire HD contract.

I guess I'll just go for it, I've been using this ancient phone for half a year and could easily wait another half but I'm sure then I'd be tempted to wait again for something even better.

I don't even know what I'm expecting, I can't exactly see exactly a phone like the Desire HD can be vastly upgraded?

Edit: Just wondering if anyone knows, does there usually b a bit of a delay between a new phone launching and it coming over here? (Preferably Meteor carrying it.)

Yes, there's often a delay and it's likely not all operators will carry it. Ask them and they might give you more details.

If the Desire HD meets your requirements go for it but if you're looking for the top of the rage I'd wait a month and see about the Galaxy S II. If nothing else it should have an impact on the price of the rest.

Oh and it's a bit off topic but I wouldn't rule out the iPhone 4. I've a Desire and I love it. I can tweak the kernel and experiment, write my own applications and so can everyone else. Most importantly I don't have to touch iTunes with a long stick which has a very positive effect on my quality of life. That said iOS is a very nice operating system, the interface is very well polished and the hardware is up to scratch. It's a lot of money so always investigate the competition!

HTC have announced a range of new phones today. After a quick look it would seem battery size has improved which would attract potential buyers to this selection.
