    hi all,

i'm not currently driving and my last prov expired about a year ago. I hope to buy a van in the next 2/3 months to emigrate and as yet haven't applied for a provisional. The RSA website is confusing me to fcuk!!

Can I apply for and pass a test for a car with the van category selected too and then when I pass me test buy the van.

I've never held a prov for a van before, only 4 provs for forklift work in 97 and cars. will i be hit with the 6 month rule if i want to apply for a van test (n1)? will i be tested in a van or a car? i have driven small/medium vans in the past with no more difficulty than a car, i hope this doesn't cause me to be stuck here any longer than i have to.

    thanks in advance

No worries, apologies i did intend on replying after i moved it but just forgot!

Since your last Learner Permit has only been expired for a year, you should be able to apply for a new one without having to complete a theory test. This would also mean that you do not have to wait 6 months until you can sit your test. You would be able to sit your test straight away.

Now, what kind of van are we talking about here? If it's a small van then you should only need a normal B license.

I'm hoping to buy a berlingo shape but if the right hiace style came along for the right money I would have considered it too. So it seems it's all down to weight at the end of the day.

I checked a link to citizensinfo just there and seen the b category, don't know where I seen it but thought vans were in cat n.

Berlingos, Hiace even long, tall,Transits are in category B ( cars and vans ). Trucks are category C. No such thing as category N vehicles on Irish roads.
If you had a learner permit / provisional licence for cars a year ago, you can get that renewed and apply for you test straight away. Consider accepting short notice, replacing a canceled test, if you are in a hurry and confident you can pass. 6 month rule does not apply to you.
