Fuel Efficient Driving Experiment

I just thought I'd share the results of my fuel efficient driving experiment.

01 1.9 petrol BMW 318CI doing approx 3/4 motorway miles. Get stuck in very little traffic the other 1/4, averaging 50mph.

I filled up the car, and drove at my usual speed approx 80mph.

Got 405 miles on the trip counter and took 60 litres to fill = 30.69mpg

Next trip I drove at 60mph, accelerated very slowly up to that speed. Kept revs low by changing gear early. Built up speed before going uphill and tried not to accelerate while climbing. Avoided breaking where possible by letting the car slow down in advance.

Got 420 miles on the trip counter and took 54.5 litres to fill = 35.03mpg

My trip to work is 18miles each way, so I calculate it would've took 2min 45 longer and saved me €0.32

In conclusion, it was painful driving so slowly on a motorway but at the same time I felt a great sense of achievement when I passed out 400miles on the tripcounter without the low fuel warning light coming on.

Have any of you done similar experiments, if so please post your results.

I achieved 14% greater fuel economy.

To be fair, 80mph is way too fast for fuel economy (and legality). 50-55mph is optimal.

So you'd save €5 an hour.

I value my time more than that.

I agree with you there and have already returned to my usual driving style.

Try a mix of the 2 driving styles. Keep it to 70-75 on the motorway and continue to not brake. Change up gear around 3500 rpm, and stay gentle on the accelerator when cruising.

See if that makes a difference to the fuel consumption and commuting time.

That would generally be how I drive on my commute (change up much lower in the rev range on diesels though) and get decent economy, while keeping up with traffic around me.
