Hi, Does anyone know where I could get a private eye test done for a child. Asked a couple of opticians and they won't do the test because he's under 12 and should get eye test in school. He's in a private school so they don't get an eye test like in national schools. I've sent off from GP letter for appointment in Crumlin but haven't even got an appointment date back several weeks later, presume at this rate it will be 2014 before he's seen.

I know somebody in the optics department in Crumlin Children Hospital, and the backlog is nearly 2 years, which is awful as it is such a long period during such a critical period of eye development.

    sent you a mail btw

What we do is tell the parents to register the child on the public system with their GP. This can take about a year to get an appointment. In the meantime go and visit an Ophthalmologist privatly. It'll probably cost about €130 but you have the child tested quickly. As a result when the child is due a new test in a years time your public appointment should come up and the tests will be free till they are 16.

We got a referral from the phn to the amo and then a referral letter from him to get my little girls eyes tested. It was going to be over a year going public,we got a recommendation of a good ophthalmologist in the Charlemont clinic and it cost 140 euro and vhi will refund a good portion of it.
