I'm thinking of getting rid of sky+ as it cost so much every month with nothing of any use on it for to watch. The way my sky+ works is that i have the sky+ box in the attic and i have the sky eye downstairs at the tele. (This is the way i had to do it because i only have one coax at my tele, but for sky+ you need two.) If i were to put in a free to air box where my sky+ box is, would the sky eye still work the free to air box or would i have to run a second coax down to my tele for to get the same functions as sky plus.

You will need to run a second cable, as the Freesat boxes don't support magic eye. You will also gain significantly in terms of picture quality, so it's worth doing.

Well you can make Sky eyes work with not Sky-kit using a TV-Link+ box at the attic end.

    See..
    http://www.tvlink.co.uk/tvlinkplus.htm

That box (or an SLX brand equivalent) will power the coax line using a PSU to drive the eye on the other end and then also retransmit the IR signal via LED wedges that can be positioned to fire at the non-Sky receiver. I used one for years to control a Dreambox and DVD player in the living room from a bedroom.

But agreed with JDxtra.. an RF signal is just no longer worth using with more and more FTA broadcasts in HD and our own DTT heading in the same direction. You'd be best advised to run the 2nd cable at least for satellite and one more for DTT.

Cool. I'll try this before i run the second coax just to see. Getting the second coax to the tv will be a proper pain the ass!

Remember, It is always quicker and cleaner to run the cable externally. So you might examine running new cable direct from dish to tv point and take the skybox out of the attic all together.

The location of my tv will make it a mess to run coax. There's no easy way to get to it internally or externally. Will really have to look at this in detail

Sometimes SKY will offer you a €5 a month retention deal for the Irish Channels only ( plus the free ones) but it does keep the + recording functions working and you do not lose existing recordings. It can be useful in some rural areas where RTE coverage is crap and there is no TV3.

Wow! Thanks Sponge bob. I must look into this, would save alot of messing. Thanks for that. I'd say it would be like getting blood from a stone dealing with SKY. But it's worth a shot
