Windows Vista Service Pack 2 :(

I uninstalled MSN with the intention of reinstalling the latest version, because there was a bug with the one I had. When I tried to reinstall it, a message appeared telling me I needed 'Windows Vista Service Pack 2' installed first. (thanks microsoft)

So I tried to download it with automatic updates, which worked for SP1 but it won't even find SP2 never mind download it. I went to the microsoft website to download it directly from their link, but that won't work either. Every time I click on the link my browser just won't connect. I tried it in FF and IE.

I searched every torrent site I could find for Vista SP2. The only site that seems to have it is Piratebay, but I can't even visit that website! (thanks eircom)

So... does anyone know how I could go about getting Windows Vista Service Pack 2??

Official download link for Vista SP2 for 32-bit systems

Official download link for Vista SP2 for 64-bit systems

I wouldn't go anywhere near a torrented version of SP2, because:
    a) why bother, when you can get a legit version straight from the horse's mouth? and
    b) who knows whether it's been "enhanced"?

For what it's worth, I've also found that SP2 installations generally go better when you download the installer manually and run it yourself, rather than letting it run through Windows Update.

Thanks for the reply but you seem to be missing the fact that my browser won't connect to the download server ;)

I've just tried clicking on the links and both go to the download page on Microsoft.

Yes, but we've still established something useful here - I and another poster have both confirmed that we can get at those download pages and start the download. You've confirmed you can't do this with either Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Do you have current AV software installed on your system? If so, when was your last full system scan? I've seen plenty of malware infections whose symptoms included being unable to access to various sites including the Microsoft website.

Good idea. I have Avast. Running a scan now, haven't done one in a few months. I'll post results.

I ran a scan, I had two infected files and they were successfully deleted. I still can't download the service pack though. I guess that's it then... there's no way for me fix my laptop without having to wipe everything :(

Is it loading the page or just downloading the file itself that causes the problem? You could try Firefox in safe mode, or even Portable Firefox, and see if that gets around the issue.

Alternatively you could download the installer elsewhere and transfer it using a CDR or USB stick. Although, in saying that, if there's something stopping you from downloading the service pack it wouldn't be surprising if you weren't able to complete the installation either...

You know, it was wreaking my head... I even thought of downloading the installer on a friends laptop and transferring it as you said (I'm fairly confident the installation would work, it did for SP1 the other night).

I found a pretty good solution to all this though :D

The main problem was not being able to reinstall MSN, because it required I have the latest versions of everything. So it just dawned at me, (at 2:30am no less), all I had to do was download MSN from 2009! I done so and it installed no bother. Back online :D

Thanks for the help Fysh. Even though different versions of Firefox may provide a temporary fix, it still does not take away from the fact that something is definitely wrong with my cpu. After I found those 2 viruses I ran a second scan. Just to be safe. And I found 3 more viruses. I think it's time to wipe and get windows 7 :o

try and clean out the viruses first, check the malware forum , should be tips there on how to use a bootable CD to do the scan

The F-Secure Rescue CD is a good one - best way to use it is burn the CD, connect the machine to the network via ethernet, then boot from the CD and follow the on-screen prompts.
