Re-registering an original UK car back to UK from Ireland

    Hi all,

Don't think this has been asked before, apologies if it has.

I am currently trying to sell my car as I want to buy a Honda S2K.

I imported my car from the UK 2 years ago and paid the VRT so its on Irish plates. I am now looking at the option of trading it against an S2k in the UK.

Does anyone know the process for re-registering the car to UK plates? There is a possibility that the garage would do this for me if I go ahead with it but I would like to know the process in case I go private. I have read in a few places that there is only a £40(ish) charge to do what I want? Can anyone confirm this?

If i can get the car back on UK plates without a big cost, it would open my options hugely over the cars available in Ireland....9 available in Ireland, 100's in Uk.....

    Thanks for any help.

    IZ

Yes you should be able to do this if you have the certificate of export or the VC5C form without the export section notification section

Might be harder to do without the old UK doc though.

You will need to register it to a UK address though if you intend to register it before selling.

Make sure you have all NCT/old MOT certs so you can prove its not been clocked or they will rape you on the trade in

Is the car worth more in the UK than VRT paid here? If not then it would make more sense to sell privately here.

I did the same a number of years ago.
Prior to doing it I phoned the DVLA in Swansea and a pleasant lady confirmed that as all the relevant UK taxes had been paid when the car was originally registered in the UK there were no taxes/duties to pay on re-registering back to the original number.
(I can't remember the full details as it was 10 years ago, but I recall they were very helpful).

Same should apply if the purchaser wants to import it back to Ireland.
