    Howdy!

Does anyone know what the applicable VAT rate is for web design / development?

Standard rate for supply of goods is 21%
Standard rate for supply of services is 13.5%

But I understand this is NOT a hard and fast rule.

Patrick has an index of VAT rates per occupation here

But that doesn’t list web design / web development or anything IT related.

Does anyone have experience of this?

    Thanks!

youre supplying a service so it should be 13.5

of you were supplying a packaged website it would be 21%

    product 21
    labour 13.5

    Yup!

I remember discussing this very issue with my accountant because I was supplying a "web design/development service", but apparently the powers-that-be don't agree.

Yes 21% as you are presumably providing an un-exempted professional service

If you are designing for companies they will most likely be VAT registered and therefore the rate of vat is not an issue.

As I understand, the only part of the web design service you can charge at other than full rate is training (e.g. post website-delivery), which you can charge at zero-rated VAT. And you can only do that if it's training for professional rather than personal reasons (check up on that, it's a bit finicky).
