Medical Card Query

    Hey all,

Ok this may seem like a silly/obvious one but bear with me :)

I was made redundant late is 2009 and as well as the dole I qualified for a medical card (which I never actually used as it happens). Anyway, I've been lucky enough to find and start a new job in the last few months and notified the DSW (or whatever they call it this week :)) and signed off etc, but I still have this medical card (was never asked for it back)

Am I entitled to use it till it expires (in July) or should I just cut it up/post it off somewhere? As it turns out I need to get a GP referral and if I have to pay for it I will, but I thought I read something here about being able to use the cards till they expire?

    Cheers for any info.

Can I retain my card if I return to work?
The retention of Medical Cards (without a means test) is approved for people as indicated below:-
    • People who participate on certain Government Employment and Education Schemes will retain their entitlement to a Medical Card for the duration of the scheme (Examples include Back to Work Allowance, Community Employment Schemes, Back to Education Allowance, etc.)
    • People who have been unemployed or in receipt of One Parent Family Payment for a minimum of 12 months will retain their Medical Card for a period of 3 years if they commence employment
    • When a person who has been unemployed for a period of 12 months or more enters part-time employment, their medical card will be retained for a period of 3 years from the date their income increases to a level which exceeds the appropriate Medical Card Guideline
    • People who hold a medical card and are in receipt of a Disability Allowance or a Blind Pension from the Department of Social and Family Affairs and who take up employment are allowed to retain their Medical Card for a maximum of 3 years from the date of taking up employment. Dependent members of the family of those covered
by the 'retention' provisions will also be granted medical cards.
    Congrats on finding work btw.

Cheers :) IT wasn't easy and I've every sympathy for anyone still looking...

From the above I guess I am allowed then (just!!) as I was made redundant in the first week of Nov 2009 and started work in the 2nd week of Nov 2010?

Does that mean though that when this expires in July I'd automatically get another for up to 2 years? It doesn't really bother me too much but no harm in asking.

    Thanks again!

You won't automatically get a new one, you'll have to apply for a renewal, but I think the expiry date on the new one will be 3 years from when you started work.

If your card expires in July, you will get a Review form in the post in April. If you enter the info you have given here, plus documentary evidence of income & a letter from Welfare stating the dates you were their guest, then you stand a good chance of getting an extension. Best of luck in the new job.

You returned to work in the 2nd week of November 2010 and you notified the SW and signed off this week?

Where you getting that from? it says they signed off, not that they only signed off now

My mistake. I misread the OP as stating that they signed off this week but now see that 'this week' referred to name changes of the Department. Apologies.
