Dealing with stress of moving jobs

I am in a totally dead end IT job. There is roughly 1 year left before the job is moved to low cost country, so I need to consider a new position.

The role i am currently in has good benifits, decent pay and i can do it with my eyes closed, so im very much in a comfort zone.

I have started to browse the job market, but each time i do, i start feeling anxiety attacks comming on.

I have a history of anxiety. When I first left University, I had to leave my first job and come home for 6 months due to depression and anxiety. I went through Cognative Behavourial Therapy (CPT), and that, along with a friendly new work envrionment helped me get established where I am now.

Although I have to move, the prospect fills me with anxiety. I need to figure out how to deal with this, so i have a few questions:

    1. Does everyone experience this level of anxiety when moving jobs, or is it a casual affair for most people?

    2. Should I just "jump in" and swim, or be more cautious?

    3. Is there any advice you can offer, if you have been in this situation before?

    Thanks.

I would be given to a little anxious thoughts when making some bigger decisions. I just have to recognize that them and put them aside before indulging them.

The only other advice I can give you is apply for everything and just trust yourself that you won't make the wrong decision. That's because you won't. If it were the wrong decision, you would know. If it might be the right choice, you will be agonizing.

This is only a decision making process. You can only make the best decision you can at any one time. If it proves to have been a less than shrewd one, you can always deal with that reality then.

    thanks "Cantdecide".

I really like your view on life, decisions and how to put them in perspective. This is a mindset that I will work towards.

    Hi OP,
I think anyone would have a normal level of anxiety in your situation, so please dont let yourself think that it is not.

The fear of the unknown and having to make a choice that may or may not lead to more anxiety is normal too. Try to look at it this way, no matter what job you pick it IS the right choice for you, no matter what happens. You are the only one that makes the choice right or wrong.

You said you have had CBT before, I know its easy to let slip on keeping control of your anxiety when we get into a comfort zone so maybe look into some more treatments before you have to move and maybe they will help you cope better.

Your health, above all else is the most important thing, trust yourself to make the right choice.
    Look after that!!

Hi There, I am glad to have read your post cos I am in more or less the same situation as you, I am relocating to be with my partner and have all those fears, and I think like yourself, because I also went through a very bad time years ago also with panic attachs and agoraphobia, evening tho I am soo happy and excited about the move and all the new things, I then get huge anxiety of how awful it might be and of me panicking that in my sleep I can feel my heart racing with the thoughts of it. SO I know how you feel more than anyone who has not really been through it before. Yes everyone gets anxious starting a new job but I think when you have gone through something so hard as that before you are maybe more scared. Only thing is we are stronger cos we got through it, so me myself am gona banish the thoughts when they come and not let my mind start showing me awful pictures of what is going to happen and change it for me being confident going around on my own and being in control.

I wish you all the success with whatever job you do land into and I do think that other poster was right in saying you will know when you've made the right decision, me I am not going to take any job if I feel no this is not right for me, and hopefully this will work out.

Sorry for rambling but its on my mind also.

    Cheeers
