Just verify the service history by ringing the garages that serviced it and do the normal background checks on the likes of motorcheck or cartell. Just be aware that they are very popular as mini-cabs/hackneys

probably work out at about €5500 by the time you get it home and pay the vrt doesn't sound bad

Why would you buy a 2007 car, with €539 tax, as opposed to a 2008 car with €156 tax?

The difference in those rates, alone, would cover the cost of a €4,000 loan. Therefore, a 2007 car would need to be at least €6,000 less than a 2008 car for you to justify the purchase.

He'd have to keep the car 10 years to save on the tax

I thought the 08 1.9TDi was €302 to tax? Anyway spending upwards of €4000 extra for a 08 over a 07 to save a few hundred on motor tax doesn't make alot of sense.

yes tax on the car is €302 and to buy an 2008 would cost a few grand more..
miles are fairly high and think it was a company car... the sterling seems to be getting stronger now too

You're missing the point. The point was, that due to the higher road tax, the 2007 car should be worth a minimum of €4k less than a '08 (for the motor tax rates mentioned), not recommending one should spend €4k more. If the price is right for the '07 car, then buy it.

As for whether it's €302 or €156, (loads of good €156 cars available)
it's not particularly important, except to say, do the sums and factor in the Motor Tax in your cost calculations.

With a €302 tax rate, the difference would equate to the interest payable on a loan of €2,500 - €3,000

just thinking it may be very difficult to sell this car in 2 -3 years time when there will be plenty of 08's available at the right price and the lower tax.. people will want the 2008 car i think and will pay the extra ..

So supposing the op keeps the car 5 years and pays an extra 1150 for tax in this time (paid interest free every year, or more frequently for a small bit extra - quarterly, every 6 months) he'd be better off paying 4k more for an 08?

In 5 years time do you reckon a 9 year old octavia will be worth substantially more than an 8 year old with lower tax?

There's a serious hole in that argument, especially if the op is financing the car.

On a 3 year loan, the 08 will be €130 a month more. This is to save €20 a month in tax.

2 years later these cars will be alot cheaper and to be honest i can see alot people choosing an 2008 which will leave the 2007 nearly impossible to sell unless very very cheap....
just was talking to a guy in england who has an red 08 octavia 1.9tdi with 98k on it...with FSH... Has to get 4300STG and 170stg to bring home...
might be a better option this one
