yes, had an 04 one from new up until Dec 2009.
it was the 1.6 SOHC vtec Type S model.

economy - pretty good as it wasnt an all out DOHC model.
comfort - good standard, but i had it lowered on 18".
power - ok, but wont set your world on fire, not much quicker than the 90bhp 1.4 model if im honest.

spec - good, climate control, electric everything, folding mirrors, heated mirrors.

trouble - nothing, not one single thing over the 5 years exceot for yearly servicing which because it was a honda and easy to work on, i done all myself and filled in the service book and kept the receipts.

if you were to recommend a similar aged car for around 5500 what would you recommend?

1.6 litre Ford Focus is a decent car. Something like this:

Or this has pretty decent spec if you could stretch your budget:

i'd buy the civic over the focus any day of the week tbh.

I think they are a great car, with good spec, and bulletproof engines, and in fairness the 02 up shape are not very skanger my banger at all. They are a really comfy car and very easy to drive, the gearstick on the dash is very handy and everything is laid out nice and simple. There is 100k on my 03 one and I had to put it though the nct and all it needed was a set of back brake discs (50quid), not bad going.

The engines in them are great, and whereas some earlier honda engines tended to burn oil a lot, most of the ep3s are well sorted, and unless its puffing smoke out the exhaust which is a sign of something seriously wrong (and a well abused engine!!), it should be ok!

yeah thanks for the suggestion of the focus but ill have to politely decline:o
cmon there must be some other suggestions lads. will stretch to a 1.8 if its ok. i have a budget of about 5500, just want something reliable and fastish. about 100-130 bhp would be perfect. the 3 cars i have in my head so far are the g. punto sporting, fabia vrs and the sohc civic. i would love the vrs but they are so bloody rare its a nightmare. any sportings in ireland are terribly overpriced so the sohc is the only one ive found.

Over budget but might be of interest.

I'm in a very similar position OP, i'll be looking for something with pretty similar criteria in mind in the coming months.

I'd go on the condition and history of a car rather than whether its a 02 or a 04.

well yeah i suppose you are right really. im just being a year snob:D
ok so criteria really. €5,500 maximum. preferably 1.6 maybe 1.8, something around 110bhp-ish. nice, sporty looking with a comfortable interior and reliable. are there any cars that are 1.6 but a bit of fun too? is the 1.6 sohc the best choice? no focuses please! ;)

I had one of those and it was lively enough and gave 40+ mpg too. Steering was a bit light tho.
