Generally a reliable car, nothing much to go wrong. I hear that build quality can be a bit iffy on pre '00 models but other than that there's nothing major I can think of off the top of my head.

Can't comment on fuel consumption I'm afraid, but I'd expect it to be average of any 4 cylinder car that size.

This forum should be a good resource if you need any more detailed info: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk

If you can stretch to a 01 or newer you will be getting the facelifted model which had improvements over the previous model including suspension upgrades, engine tweaks and improved build. The later models also came with better standard equipment.

Things to watch out for as mentioned already, suspension components are weak on them and also make sure all electrics work as they can be iffy.

I had a 98 model (grand car tbh - must have the 2.0l though). There's an issue with the rear suspension bushings causing knocking. I believe that the fix is to weld the 2 parts together. You should check this out with the dealer.

    I had a 2l S40, year 1998.

Would I buy another one? No, not really. Not that fun to drive, heavy on petrol and not that well built.

It is not actually that bad car, but not that great either.

I think I would buy a Honda Accord instead.

    Thread resurrect!

I've been offered a late year 2000 V40 2.0 with 124k miles on the clock for free.
Apart from the brakes not being great it is in good working condition and is clean and tidy.

What is your opinion of this car and what does one need to look out for with the engine?

    I haven't had a test drive yet.
