    Hi,
I'm looking to buy a 2nd hand car and was looking at cbg.ie. some cars seem very cheap, too cheap.
    There's an Audi:
    Audi A3 Hatchback 1.9 TDI 1.9L Diesel, 5 door, 2008 14,000km for€4,800

    And another one:
    Audi A3 SPORTBACK 1.9 TDI Diesel 5DR SPORT 1.9L 2007 154,000 Kms €9,000

A year newer, very low milage and over half price cheaper. Surely this can't be right. I've seen other ads for 2 cars virtually the same but massive price difference.

I've e-mailed the owners but am suspicious. Or could it just be 'hard times' and they're desperate to sell.
    Cheers,
    Pa.

It's a scam. No one in their right mind would sell an 08 A3 for under 5000....even with a tractor engine!

If its to good to be true, it generally is!

    Walk away!

Scam, stay away. You'll get the standard response about the car being in the UK soon enough.

Total scam, amazed how many people can be blinded by a very cheap asking price.

Besides the ridiculously cheap price, the scammer tends to do all communication through email as they do not want to have direct contact with their victim. Either there is no tel number in the advert or the number is fake or no longer in use.

I presumed that it was a scam but wanted to hear what people know about such 'great deals'. Also why cbg and carzone don't do something about them? Maybe too many ads to monitor them all...

I e-mailed the seller and their response is below. I've decided to 'play' with them a bit. I'm going to reply and say that my brother/friend lives in Germany and that they could meet up so he can have a proper look at the car. See what the reply is, probably none...
    Hi,

The 2008 Audi A3 is still for sale. A great car, never implied in any accident, in excellent condition with full service history.

I have changed my job and now I have to sell it as I've got back home in GERMANY. The car is here as well.

The final price is 4.800 € + shipping to your door. For an accurate shipping cost please include your shipping address in your next email.

As you probably noticed, the price is rather low. But since it's a right hand drive car, not even a dealer will offer me a better price here. The fact that it's still Ireland registered did not help either.

I am the registered keeper and there is no outstanding finance on the vehicle. The car is in excellent condition, the bodywork is immaculate, no scratches, dents or hidden defects as well as the interior in excellent non-smoking condition.

Due to amount involved and due the fact I am not located in Ireland anymore, I only accept transaction through eBay.

Please email me soon if you want to move forward and let me know if you need anything else.
    All the best! Nicole Schmidt

Here is her latest (long) reply:

I have already obtain the costs for delivery the car to Ireland. Those are €240, including insurance, so your total will be €4,240.
I want to point out that because I am in the process of moving because of changing my working place, I am after a fast transaction, with no delays. That is why I decided to lower the price, to avoid wasting time with negotiations and find a buyer as soon as possible. I am German, not Irish (I just worked there for few years).

    Registration Number: 08D69509
    Chassis Number: WAUZZZ8PX9B000833

As I told you , I'm currently in Germany. At the moment I'm in Munich on business and the vehicle is located at the shipping company in Hamburg.

The car will be insured at the shipping company for the transport. I already have it on shipping co. possession along with ALL doc ready to GO so will be no local pick up available.

This is basically how the transaction through eBay works:

Firstly I need your contact details complete name and the address for shipping so I can open a case with eBay regarding our transaction, they will contact you and send you the documents for our transaction (Case ID, and Invoice).

You will have to lodge the payment into an eBay account and they will keep your payment until you receive the car (so your payment will be secure until you receive and inspect the car).

When the car will be delivered to your door, you will have 5 days to check the car (test it, drive it,and even take it to a local service ..etc) so you can see that everything is ok with it. If the car doesn't match with what I told you,it will be shipped back to me on my own expense (however I doubt that this shall be the case because the car is exactly how I described it to you) and you will be refunded your total payment.

If you are totally content with the car and that you want to continue with the purchase You will have to notify eBay. Once you have made this decision, only then the payment will be transferred into my account.

Remember they have absolutely no authority to release the payment until they get your full approval.

I hope I explained everything to you ok. After we complete all these above steps I can only hope that you should be fully satisfied as the new owner of my car.

All of you have friends or relatives in Germany I know....Let me explain why I am doing this through eBay.....!!!!!!!!!

I will not lose anymore time waiting for the client to come and see it. This is not the first time when I have such offer, and everything turns to be a wasting of time. Last week I took 3 days of from my job to wait clients to come and see my A3 but....surprise no one shows up..... and also I had the car for sale 2 weeks agoo... and I found a buyer for it. I was in Ireland with my husband to meet him and handle him the car and documents but surprise, he do not answer the phone all day and totally dissapear. This is no reflection on you, but once I've had my fingers burnt I don't make the same mistakes twice! so I am not prepared to go ahead unless eBay will confirm that have your money in them account. I understand your hesitance not waste time and money, but that is the only way I will complete the transaction.
So, sorry, I want a quick sale. I have no warranty that you'll come and i have many persons interested to buy it, so i will not take the chance to lose an real buyer for just some promises.

NOW YOU UNDERSTAND MY CAUTION???? and no offence but I spent for the postings on CBG more than €140 because everytime when I person said that he will come to see the car or he will send a friend to see it ....We closed the add to show him that we reserve the Audi for him but.....

Now if you want to go ahead with the transaction provide me your details and I will forward them to eBay.

I'm waiting to receive your contact details so I can open a case with eBay ASAP.
    Kind regards, Nicole.

I presume by "eBay" she means PayPal, which is a fully secure payment method, isn't it?

I presume so. Maybe if they have your address, full name, amount lodged etc they can find some way to 'get at' the money....

    something dodge ?

I emailed these lads about a ridiculously cheap Range Rover - got much the same response as yourself above.

here's a Cayenne they have for sale too.

I am pretty sure I've seen this car for sale somewhere else also, so they are stealing the pics from someone else as above.

Thats why I did my good deed for the day, reported the ads to carzone. I know they'll just open another ad but I might have saved someone a few quid!

    Hi guys,

CBG were in contact with us and asked us to post the following on their behalf:
Thank you for all your comments and concerns with regards some of the issues in the past on the www.CBG.ie (Carbuyersguide) website. I would like to provide you with an update on what we have completed to improve the service to both you as viewers, and for car dealers since Nov 2012 - We ran a root and branch review of the website and have considerably re invested into the website and stock on the site. Listed below are the main structural changes and advancements

Most importantly - We have created a blocker for scam adverts that we monitor daily with a human eye to ensure that we keep the site clean. As we allow you to sell your car for free on the site, these are placed on the site through professional scammers in Europe taking advantage of the free model. I have the Garda involved with this at this time. Should you come across and old one that just seems too good to be true, then report to info@cbg.ie immediately.

    Our recent investment into CBG;
    • Rebuilt the complete site from a .net platform to a modern PHP platform
    • Outsourced IT support and development to a 3rd party
    • Hired a new sales team based on Account Management
    • New response packages for advertisers
    • Mobile site traffic growth and improvements
    • New SEO company improving traffic
    • Breaking news, reviews, and podcasts
Finally - I have worked closely since November with the main manufactures in Ireland (BMW, VW, Nissan, Toyota, etc...) and now have all their stock updated daily on the site via feeds - So clean accurate stock for you to enquire about.
Please enjoy with confidence the new improvements. I hope this will alleviate any concerns mentioned here in these threads.
More advancements to come in early Autumn.

    Thank you
    Joe Kavanagh

You pay them via paypal. Transfer is immediate.

They move the money to a bank account. Takes 5 days. During which your car is shipping to you.

You don't get the car, you lodge a dispute with Paypal. They freeze the account and tell you there is no money to give back to you, because they only have access to their internal systems, once its out of Paypal, its out.

Scammer creates a new paypal account. Starts again.
