My Linksys WRT54G won't transmit some video files from YouTube from wireless isp to computer. Direct connect to computer (eliminating router) works just fine so I'm sure it's a problem with the routher

Is the router set up to block youtube through content filtering or similar.. Where did you get the router from, was it on a business premises that may have configured it to block such sites at any stage?

What exactly happens when the video is blocked.. does it come up with an "Error 404 page can not be found", or does the page come up but video bit just wont play?

And by "some" do you mean particular videos, or that just randomly videos are prevented from being downloaded... Is there any possibility that it is an issue with slow broadband connectivity... are you on 3G or some sort of "temperamental" broadband?

If it was me, I would try resetting the router again.. maybe upgrade the firmware on the router.. This is what the router manufacturers recommend for every issue that you have, and sometimes it works..

You're gonna need to give us more.. Believe me I've been through the same things a thousand times as an engineer.. I know you're frustrated but you need to post something that we can advise you on...

If it were me... I would borrow a different laptop and trying connecting to the Internet as you are currently (through the Linksys WRT54G) and see if it exhibits the same characteristics.. If it does, then you can focus on sorting the router out - whether through resetting, upgrading firmware, reconfiguring, or replacing it if it's broken..

Can I assume that you are connecting wirelessly to the WRT54G with your current laptop, yeah? And that you have power cycled the router a couple of times..

It doesnt sound like the Router is configured properly. I use the same model router religiously because I've always known them for reliability, but its worth saying they work best when coupled with a Cable Broadband Modem. Outside of that I've seen some quirky things happen. What type of service is Magnet and what does their website say about router configuration?

I bet my ass its a wireless channel problem.

Try changing the channel to 1, 6 or 11.

Also download "InSSiDer" program. It will show all wireless networks around you.

You & your nebour are fighting over that channel I'm sure. That used to happen to me. Youtube videos would load half way or sometimes never at all.

    Hey guys and gals,

I've got a similar problem. I also have a WRT54G wireless router. I have a Linksys cable modem as well. My problem with youtube is every item loads on a youtube page however 99% of the time the video content will just sit there loading, not actually downloading any info. This happens if I am either directly plugged into the router or if I'm wireless. As well If I remove the router from the equation and plug directly into the modem, works like a dream, or if i use my linksys switch i have no problems. I've reset back to factory defaults and tried just about every thing I can think of. The funny thing is it never used to be this way. This only started happening a little over 6 months or so ago. I've had the router for a number of years now with no problems. The only thing that has been happening is that every once in a great while it will revert back to factory settings. At first I thought some one had cracked my router and was sucking free signals but then it didn't happen until several months later. Maybe it's just time for a new router. Unless it's just a firmware thing?

    Thanks for any input.

    John

Ok I updated the firmware and all is well! Guess I didn't try "every thing".
