I have found a car I am interested in from Belgard Auctions. It not in an auction and has a set price.

Its a 02 car no NCT. Does anyone have experience buying from them & have any tips/comments?

Get them to nct it before even thinking of handing a cent over!

What make/model is it? Giving us the model might throw up some common problems or things to watch out for.

Definately would not buy it without a fresh NCT though. Also make sure they are not selling it as a "sold as seen" ie no warranty.

Ive heard its 'easier' for a dealer to NCT a car then privately. Is it something to be worried about?

    Also its a 206.

The OP said it's not in an auction though.. Even still, wouldn't really touch it without NCT. Plently of Pug 206s out there.

All stuff in belgardauctions is sold as seen,
a mate of mine bought a car there but got mechanic to check it out because they advised him to do so, because there's no comeback.

As for the set price i think you can make a bid and they'll ring the owner and submit your bid. AFAIK prices are guide prices.

He's happy enough 6 months later.

my mistake, quick reading again :)
then i would do as you say get the garage to NCT it or indeed get it in writting that the car will pass the NCT or the garage will fix any problems.

Would they let me bring it to my mechanic or would the mechanic have to go out to them?

go out to them more than likely.

Thats what I thought. Would prefer to get it up on a ramp tbh & get emissions checked etc. Ugh I have my heart set on this one mainly due to price!

I think if it was NCT'd the guide price would be higher. how much is it ?

Don't let your judgement be clouded by the price. The car maybe on the level but don't let your heart rule your brain when buying solely on it being at the right price.

Does anyone know a mechanic near Belgard Auctions that would check out car for a reasonable price?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,815 ✭✭✭✭Anan1

Why not just buy privately? Unless it's cheaper than a private sale, this sounds like an awful way to buy a car.

Why is this an awful way to buy a car ?

100's of buyers in the last year wouldn't agree

why not NCT the car then?

No warranty, no preparation, you don't get to meet the previous owner, and Belgard Auctions need to be paid too?

That's a good selling point - for sheep.

If the auction are selling the car on behalf of a vendor, it wouldn't be up to them to NCT it, it would be the vendor's problem.

The fact that it's for sale at a fixed price as opposed to auction makes no difference. Most auction houses will sell any car by "private treaty" once it has already been through one auction session. The terms and conditions are usually the same as if you bought at an auction itself, just that you bypass the bidding lark and get straight to the reserve price.

The OP is attracted to the car because of it's price. Obviously the price reflects the lack of NCT, and the vendor is choosing to sell this way at a reduced price, as opposed to NCT'ing the car. This could be for a variety of reasons, eg if the vendor was a finance house, or a solicitor selling on behalf of an estate, or on the other extreme, a dealer reckoning that it would cost too much to prepare the car for test.

@OP, bring your mechanic to see the car and listen to their advice.

Very very unlikely that you can take car out of auction yard without paying for it first. How could they be sure that you would bring it back in one piece, or at all? Too much gamble for the auction relative to the commission they are likely to make on the sale.

    Unlike private sale we gaurantee

    GOOD TITLE to the Vechicle
We do a full history check inc.
    Any finance outstanding,
    Is it reported stolen,
Is it on the crashed/written off database,
Are there any discrepencies in the indicated mileage
Are the number of owners as stated
Is the NCT and tax Valid as displayed
Is the colour and spec correct as per the Reg Cert.
Has it ever been a Taxi Hackney OR LIMO.

Yes all cars are Sold as seen.
    However,
We encourage all purchasers to get a mechanic or engineer to check out the car they are
interested in before completion of sale. This is often not the case with a private seller on the side
    the side of the road
All cars go to auction but we provide guide prices to help people and
we will submit bids to owners all week.
In summary each individual car should be taken on its own merits whether, buying privately,
from auction or even from a main dealer.
I know its easy to dismiss certain things on internet forums, but we have 100's and 100's of satisfied
purchasers and sellers in the last year.
I trust the Moderators will accept this post in good faith.

    Thanks to Lifer Sean aswell

35e gets you all that with www.motorcheck.ie
anyway, theres nothing wrong with selling cars this way aslong as the buyer knows the pros and cons involved.

OP is the car a genuine bargain compared to similar cars available private and with other dealers?

Absolutely, if it comes in the post, Fantastic.

If not and you go back to the rented house and ring the Tesco mobile, that's now turned off, what do you do then ?

Just look at the sticky for the skyline above and you get an idea of what can go wrong.

Part of due diligence when buying privately is assessing the seller - Belgard deny me that and charge for the privilege. Sorry, but I just don't see that you're bringing anything of value to the table.

The reason I am looking to buy from Belgard as it has the car I like for a very good price. It is far cheaper than private and with the savings I can easily afford to put it through the NCT.

Anyway all being well Ill be checking the car our with a mechanic on Wednesday..

Thats the only reason I would ever buy at auctions.

I was actually looking at a few cars in belgard auctions a few months back but left it (partially thanks to advice here :P ) as the cars were not cheaper than private sales.

Moral of the story - what are you buying at auction? Another man's car trouble.

thats absolutely fair enough and it sounds like you know what your doing.
best of luck with the purchase.

I was advised via email that this was a set price and I could show up during office hours pay the price (no added fees) and drive away. Just want to make sure it is like that & I don't have to bid for it.
